On January 15th, a significant escalation occurred in the rap feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar when Drake decided to take legal action against Universal Music Group for defamation. This was prompted by Kendrick’s diss track “Not Like Us.” The lawsuit, submitted in a federal court in New York City, claims that UMG, the company that oversees both artists, distributed and promoted the song despite it containing baseless pedophilia accusations against Drake and encouraging listeners to take matters into their own hands through vigilante justice.
As a devoted follower, I can share that, according to the lawsuit, the outcome consisted of intruders firing at a security guard, two burglaries at Drake’s Toronto residence, online defamation and harassment, a dent in his reputation, and a drop in the worth of his brand prior to this year’s contract negotiations with the defendant label.
The legal document makes it clear that the lawsuit isn’t targeting the artist behind Not Like Us, which is Kendrick Lamar. Instead, it focuses solely on Universal Music Group, the record company, for publishing, promoting, profiting from, and disseminating claims they knew were not only untrue but potentially harmful.
The suit claims that “UMG acted this way as they recognized the controversial and sensational nature of the recording’s content was a valuable asset.
Moreover, the lawsuit alleges that the music corporation invested substantially and leveraged their contacts to secure a performance of “Not Like Us” during the upcoming Super Bowl, with Lamar serving as the halftime entertainer.
Drake is seeking a trial and an undisclosed amount of money for damages through the filing.
Earlier, Drake claimed that Universal Music Group (UMG) artificially boosted the playlists of the song “Not Like Us” across various streaming platforms. Remarkably, this song has been recognized with five Grammy nominations, among them Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
On Wednesday afternoon, UMG responded to Drake’s recent lawsuit claims by stating that these allegations are false. They further explained that it is illogical to think that they would intentionally harm any artist, especially one like Drake, whom they have heavily invested in. Over the years, their global team has worked diligently to help Drake achieve remarkable commercial and personal financial successes.
As a devoted follower, I’d rephrase it this way: “During my professional journey, Drake has strategically and effectively utilized Universal Music Group (UMG) as a platform to disseminate his music and poetry. He’s been involved in unconventional ‘rap battles’ with other artists, exchanging fiery words publicly. Now, he aims to exploit the legal system to stifle an artist’s creative freedom and claim compensation from UMG for distributing that artist’s work.
About a decade back, Drake and Lamar occasionally worked together, but starting from 2013, Lamar started making subtle jabs at Drake. Last year, their rivalry intensified significantly.
