Get Ready for a Nostalgic Comeback: New GREMLINS and GOONIES Sequels in the Works!

Make sure your water bottle is capped and quell your hunger before midnight, as it seems the creature known as Mogwai might make another appearance in our world soon. According to recent reports, Warner Bros. is working on Gremlins 3, a project led by the original film’s writer Christopher Columbus. Moreover, Warner Bros. isn’t stopping at just one ’80s throwback – they are also reportedly awaiting a treatment for a sequel to the beloved adventure film, The Goonies.

In an extensive article published by Deadline regarding Warner’s innovative approach to their upcoming films, Anthony D’Alessandro subtly included an intriguing detail brimming with significant potential. This is the information he shared:

Excitement grows for upcoming projects in the realm of “Lord of the Rings”: “The Hunt for Gollum”, “Practical Magic 2”, DC’s “Clayface” and “Supergirl”, Drew Goddard’s draft for a new “Matrix”, a fresh take on “Gremlins” by Christopher Columbus, and a script for a “Goonies” revival.

A fresh take on “Gremlins,” penned by the same author of the cherished 1984 movie, Chris Columbus.

It’s not likely that this reported Gremlins 3 project will happen anytime soon, given that immediately following the big news is the mention of Warner Bros. beginning work on a long-anticipated Goonies sequel. While intellectual property and nostalgia hold significant value, it appears that the Goonies sequel might be further down the line. If the studio’s expectations for the treatment are met, the likelihood of a Goonies 2 increases significantly.

Back in the day, there was a lot of buzz surrounding a potential third installment of the Gremlins series, not just because of Nick Lutsko’s unofficial creation, but also due to the excitement stirred up by the release of “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” in 1990. Fast forward to 2017, and it felt like our dreams were about to come true as director Chris Columbus revealed he had already penned a script for Gremlins 3, describing it as “twisted” and “dark.” Now, I’m wondering if that original screenplay is the one Warner Bros. is currently working on or if perhaps Columbus has made revisions or even started anew on another one?

We’re yet to find out, but here’s what we’re certain of: we’ll be more mindful about not leaving any forgotten cups of water around. We’ve been eagerly anticipating Gremlins 3, and even though we don’t know when it’s coming, we still recall the rules by heart.
