As a die-hard fan, I found myself torn between admiration and curiosity when Whoopi Goldberg spoke up about Carrie Underwood‘s decision to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20th. Though I personally won’t be tuning in for the event itself, she made it clear that she understands and supports Underwood’s artistic freedom. In response to the criticism directed towards the country music sensation, Goldberg addressed the backlash head-on.
Goldberg expressed her viewpoint that individuals like politicians and public figures should be allowed to exercise their own judgement, and this autonomy should be respected. On “The View,” she stated, “I stand by her side. If I think it’s my prerogative to decide to appear somewhere, then I believe she has the same privilege. I must support.
Afterward, Goldberg hinted at the importance of the day being Martin Luther King Jr. Day. She made it clear that she holds no enthusiasm for Trump’s occasion and expressed, “I don’t express much interest in it. I won’t be tuning in, but that’s just my personal preference.
Goldberg’s fellow cohosts had a range of reactions to this action taken by Underwood. Alyssa Farah Griffin voiced her approval, stating that she disagrees with attempts to boycott artists based on their political beliefs. In contrast, Joy Behar and Sunny Hostin expressed concerns that such actions might lend credibility to Trump’s troubled administration.
In simpler terms, Behar expressed, “I find it difficult to both cherish a nation and condone actions of someone who is a known criminal, intends to damage the country, and me, I wouldn’t endorse such behavior. However, I advocate for free speech, so I won’t tell others not to do it. But personally, I wouldn’t choose to act that way.
Meanwhile, Hostin agreed with Behar but maintained belief in free speech and artistic rights.
