Skyrim’s Werewolves Were Almost Left Out Due to Early Design Flaws

In the game ‘The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim’, we run across various beasts, among them being werewolves. Interestingly, these werewolves almost didn’t feature in the game due to an initial design that was quite subpar. Bethesda even contemplated cutting them out altogether.

Initially, Dennis Mejillones, a character artist at Bethesda, disclosed that the initial werewolf designs consisted of human bodies with canine heads. However, this peculiar appearance didn’t align well with the game’s overall atmosphere. Feeling that werewolves should have a more menacing appearance, akin to movie creatures such as those seen in ‘Underworld’, Mejillones and his colleague, Jeremy Bryant, made adjustments to the design accordingly.

Working covertly outside of regular hours, Mejillones and Bryant crafted a more fearsome werewolf model prototype. They designed a playable sample to exhibit their enhanced design. When they were satisfied with their project, Mejillones shared the demo personally with Todd Howard, a key figure at Bethesda.

Howard found the redesign captivating and believed that the werewolf element suited Skyrim perfectly. Although some team members raised doubts about seamlessly incorporating this fresh feature into the game, Howard advocated for its integration.

Mejillones and Bryant significantly contributed to the lore of Skyrim by developing the intriguing concept of werewolves. What started as a potential dismissal, they turned it into an enduring element that gamers still appreciate today.
