DC Comics Blamed For Diamond Comic Distributors Bankruptcy & Failure

In light of the recent filing for bankruptcy by Diamond Comic Distributors, a comic book store owner is pointing fingers at DC Comics, alleging them as the cause of the situation.

In 2020, DC Comics ended their partnership with Diamond and opted instead for Lunar Distribution, UCS Comic Distributors, and Penguin Random House, and by 2023, they switched to Universal Distribution for distributing their comics to comic book stores.

Brian Hibbs, proprietor of Comix Experience in San Francisco since 1989 and renowned for writing a column at Comic Book Resources from 2008 to 2016, recently shared a post on Facebook that attributed issues to DC Comics.

According to Hibbs, Diamond Comic Distributors filing for bankruptcy is extremely unfortunate news for the comic book industry. He suggests that we bid farewell to many small publishers as the current distributors show little interest in collaborating with them. Furthermore, Hibbs strongly emphasizes that any responsibility for this situation lies squarely on DC Comics, and it’s crucial that we never forget or downplay this blame.

Here is his full message:

It seems that many individuals had hoped Diamond Comics would struggle. Unfortunately, it appears their wishes are being granted as Diamond has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy. This development is undeniably grim news for the comic book industry, especially in the immediate and mid-term future. Smaller publishers might find themselves fading away, and many opportunities for upcoming and lesser-known creators could vanish too.

Always remember unequivocally that DC Comics bears sole responsibility for this incident. Let’s never overlook nor suppress this blame in our minds.

I hope the best for Steve Geppi, along with everyone at Diamond. Additionally, I send heartfelt hopes and resilience to creators and fellow retailers as we all find our way through this market turbulence.

Penguin Random House prefers not to take on any accounts that are smaller than the ones they currently manage. Apart from being our main retail competition, Lunar has been inefficient in their work and, based on my opinion, might struggle with managing additional vendors. The year 2025 could turn out to be quite challenging.

Additionally, Hibbs shared a link to a recent YouTube interview he took part in, discussing potential dangers to the comic book director market should Diamond encounter failure.

As reported by Diamond Comic Distributors, the business intends to stay operational while seeking buyers for its assets. Their commitment is to fill all orders efficiently and promptly.
