Increasingly, women are sharing accounts of supposed sexual misconduct they experienced with Neil Gaiman, the renowned fantasy writer famed for works such as The Sandman, Good Omens, and Coraline.
A Vulture report published on Tuesday, January 13, featured numerous women making on-the-record accusations against a 64-year-old novelist. Among them was Scarlett Pavlovich, who used to babysit for the author and his former wife, Amanda Palmer. Pavlovich stated that she and Palmer, whom Gaiman wed in 2011, had been friends since Pavlovich was 22 years old.
As a die-hard fan, I’d be thrilled if I could share that it’s rumored I once pleaded with Pavlovich to look after Gaiman’s little one on his enchanting Waiheke Island retreat in Aotearoa New Zealand, while the beloved couple went their separate ways.
According to Lila Shapiro from Vulture, Pavlovich stated that she and Neil Gaiman were the only ones at home while they waited for his son’s return from a playdate. She claimed that Gaiman proposed she take a bath. Subsequently, as she was in the tub, Pavlovich asserted that Gaiman entered the room, bare, and proceeded to assault her.
Pavlovich clarified, “I responded with ‘No,’ and added that I’m uncomfortable with my body. He reassured me, saying, ‘That’s alright – it’s just me here. Take it easy. Let’s talk.’
As a devoted admirer, I’ve come across accounts suggesting that the author, in question, insisted on being referred to as “Master,” while addressing me as “Good Girl.” The story further unfolds with allegations of recurring assaults during my role as their babysitter. Shockingly, it’s also claimed that his son started using terms like “slave” and demanded I address him as “Master” too. These claims are truly disheartening to hear, especially from someone whose work I’ve admired deeply.
In July 2023, accusations of sexual assault were initially levied against the author. This came about when the British podcast Master aired six episodes that contained claims from five women regarding alleged misconduct by Gaiman.
Additionally, Caroline, Katherine Kendall, Kendra Stout, along with other individuals, were among those who shared their perspectives in the cover article published by Vulture.
Since 2023, I’ve been steadfastly refuting all allegations that have come my way. As a creator with numerous television adaptations of my novels underway, I found it necessary to distance myself from the production of the third season of Amazon Prime Video’s Good Omens adaptation amidst the ensuing turmoil.
Reach out to a local mental health professional or non-governmental organization if you or someone you know is dealing with assault or abuse and needs help. You can also talk to someone about this issue, as there are numerous resources and hotlines available to provide assistance.
