‘Den of Thieves’ Director Confirms a Third Film Is Being Pitched

The sequel to “Den of Thieves,” titled “Panthera,” has had quite a journey to the big screen. It all started back in 2018 when director and writer, Christian Gudegast, began crafting the follow-up to “Den of Thieves.” This movie, initially met with mixed reviews upon release, gradually garnered more attention over time.

Initially released as a film featuring Gerard Butler and O’Shea Jackson Jr., it garnered a worldwide revenue of $80 million against a production cost of $30 million. Following its premiere, interest in the movie skyrocketed, particularly on social networking platforms, where its fanbase significantly expanded.

Before the initial movie became widely popular, the sequel was already being worked on behind the scenes. Filmmaker Gudegast spent numerous years studying genuine legal cases and events to craft the storyline, but the project encountered several production setbacks. Now, it appears that a third film is in the pipeline!

Due to the pandemic and Butler’s health concerns in 2020, followed by the impact of the war in Ukraine on their intended filming locations in Croatia and Serbia, the team was compelled to postpone production. After attempting France but finding it too costly, they eventually settled on Tenerife, Spain as their filming headquarters.

Now, it’s been around seven years, and “Den of Thieves 2” is now playing in cinemas. The plot continues two years after the initial movie. Character Big Nick, portrayed by Butler, is still pursuing Donnie (Jackson), who has escalated his criminal activities to an international level. However, the situation shifts when Big Nick chooses to partner with Donnie for a robbery at the World Diamond Center in Nice, France.

If the second installment of Gudegast’s movie series proves successful, he has plans for a third film. According to him, a draft for “Den of Thieves 3” has been written, and preparations for production are underway.

The proposal has been made and executed. We’re all set to proceed. We’re quite optimistic about the outcome, but let’s not jinx it – a little caution never hurts.

Gudegast acknowledges his dissatisfaction with certain marketing choices, particularly trailers that disclosed excessive plot details. Instead, he prefers enigmatic teasers which preserve crucial elements. However, he has faith in the studio’s strategy and hopes that ultimately, everything will prove to be worthwhile!
