In April, it was announced that Drew Goddard, famed for his work on “The Martian” and “The Cabin in the Woods”, will direct a new Matrix film for Warner Bros. Discovery. For years, fans have been speculating about a reboot or spin-off, and this project could potentially fulfill those anticipations.
The first “Matrix” film, debuted in 1999, was an unprecedented success. However, its sequels, “The Matrix Reloaded” and “The Matrix Revolutions,” which were released in 2003, failed to ignite the same level of excitement among viewers. In 2021, Lana Wachowski (without her sister Lilly) took the helm once more for “The Matrix Resurrections,” but it too faced a lukewarm reception from fans.
As a cinephile penning my thoughts on the upcoming Matrix installment, I must admit there’s been no official word yet regarding the participation of our beloved original cast members, including Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, Laurence Fishburne, and Hugo Weaving. However, a tantalizing whisper from @MyTimeToShineH (via SFF Gazette) has sent shockwaves through the cinematic realm, hinting that pop sensation Ariana Grande could potentially headline Lana Goddard’s Matrix reboot. This potential casting would certainly mark a monumental shift in Grande’s career, following her critically acclaimed performance in Wicked.
Ariana Grande has expressed a desire to delve deeper into acting opportunities. Last year, she mentioned, “I have a passion for acting and musical theater, and I’d like to focus on this more in the future.” Although she wants us to know that her music career is not ending, she’s keen on finding a balance by taking on more acting roles.
Goddard, thrilled about the upcoming revival of the Matrix, expressed, ‘The Matrix movies have had a profound impact on my life. Lana and Lilly’s creativity fuels me every day, and I am deeply grateful for this chance.’ The Matrix saga centers around a universe where people are captive in a fabricated reality controlled by machines. The protagonist, Neo, discovers this secret world and battles to liberate mankind.
