Producer Explains Why We Won’t be Seeing MJ and Ned in ‘Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man’

Marvel Studios is preparing to debut a fresh take on the character Peter Parker, in their animated show titled “Our Friendly Local Spider-Man“. This series, which will be available on Disney+ starting January 29th, is set in a timeline distinct from the one we’re accustomed to seeing in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

In the storyline, you’ll find characters similar to Norman Osborn, but popular figures such as Ned and MJ are not set to make an appearance.

During a chat on The Official Marvel Podcast, executive producer Dana Vasquez-Eberhardt shared the reason behind their decision to exclude characters like Ned and MJ from this particular series.

The series highlights a scenario where Norman Osborn served as Spider-Man’s mentor rather than Tony Stark. This fictional work delves into an alternate universe, one in which the MCU’s well-known events, such as the Civil War, unfolded distinctly due to the impact of the multiverse.

In this adaptation, unlike the live-action movies, Peter Parker doesn’t attend Midtown High. Instead, the narrative opens after the Sokovia Accords have been signed, marking Peter’s first day at a new high school. However, an unexpected event alters the course of events, resulting in a different timeline.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we find ourselves post-Civil War and with the Sokovia Accords in effect, setting the scene for the contemporary era. On Peter’s first day at Midtown High School, an unexpected event causes a deviation from our usual path. To avoid spoilers, let me tiptoe around the details, but suffice it to say that this divergence results in Peter not attending Midtown after all. This alternate universe is familiar, yet in it, Peter never crosses paths with Ned or MJ.

In the world we know, Peter doesn’t encounter Ned or MJ; instead, he interacts with Nico Minoru, who is famously known as Sister Grimm. Skilled in the art of magic, Nico often teams up with Spider-Man in comic books. This makes her an ideal fit for this reimagined tale featuring Peter’s adventures.

In a new twist, the series will delve into Peter’s formative years, offering innovative interactions for his character.
