Transgender Drama ‘Midnight in Bali’ Debuts Trailer Ahead of Rotterdam Premiere

‘Midnight in Bali’ – a forthcoming drama, is the creation of Indonesian director Razka Robby Ertanto. This movie will premiere in the innovative and socially significant Harbour section of the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The film delves deeply into themes such as identity, community, and personal growth, offering a tantalizing glimpse of its compelling narrative through a newly released trailer.

The narrative revolves around Bulan, a transgender woman who performs in Bali clubs. She grapples with a complex romance involving a hesitant police officer while confronting her tumultuous past. Bulan’s life experiences an unforeseen shift when she offers refuge to her neighbor Mira, escaping domestic violence. Intrigued by the LGBTQ+ community, Mira suggests they join forces to create a movie about Bulan’s compelling journey.

This partnership provides insight into Bulan’s past, encompassing her journey away from a rigidly spiritual childhood, her relocation to Bali alongside her partner, Bram, who was absent upon her arrival.

In her pursuit of Bram, Mira finds herself venturing into secluded areas of the city, eventually uncovering him employed within the adult entertainment sector. These encounters form the crux of Mira’s movie, crafting a multi-layered storyline that blends old wounds with current struggles, resulting in outcomes she didn’t anticipate.

In his own words, Director Ertanto chooses to tell his story against the backdrop of Bali’s distinctive cultural blend, seamlessly weaving its rich traditions with the swift pace of modernization that characterizes the island. He describes it as a “tangled web of fast-paced modernity and conservatism”, stating that his role as a director carries a sense of responsibility towards this matter of representation, which is continually intertwined with our pursuit for social justice.

The movie showcases an impressive ensemble of actors, such as Juan Bio One, Tatjana Saphira, Luna Maya, Carissa Perussete, and Donny Damara.
