This year, Ryan North and R.B. Silva are all set to stir things up in the Marvel Universe with a nine-part series titled “One World Under Doom”. In this storyline, Doctor Doom has an audacious scheme to conquer the world, making the entire planet bow to his dominion.
Following his appointment as Sorcerer Supreme from Doctor Strange in the storyline known as “Blood Hunt”, Doom returned to Latveria to enact his ambitious plans. A new normal is on the horizon, and writer Ryan North gives us a sneak peek at what’s coming next.
During an intimate interview with Marvel.com, North asserts that Doctor Doom’s allure stems from his unique mix of mystical powers, scientific prowess, and unwavering conviction that he is the protagonist in his own tale.
Doctor Doom is an exceptional villain. A few years back, I penned a book titled “Conquering the Globe,” which kicks off with my statement, “Doctor Doom stands out as the finest villain.” His appeal lies in his scientific prowess, magical abilities, and his conviction that he is actually a good guy. If not for Reed Richards, I believe Doom would be revered as a hero instead. However, he is far from being a virtuous individual, and this complex character is endlessly captivating to me.

North emphasizes that although Doom is commonly recognized as the Fantastic Four’s arch-nemesis, his significance in the broader Marvel Universe is now indisputable. Characters such as Iron Man are already familiar with Doom, enabling smoother storytelling when Doom’s impact extends beyond his typical adversaries to encompass everyone within the universe.
In a key aspect, the narrative highlights Doom’s unique blend of unshakable self-assurance and hidden vulnerabilities, particularly when it comes to Reed Richards. This is the individual who consistently manages to elude Doom’s intellectual grasp.
As a movie enthusiast, one dynamic I’m intrigued to delve into is the relationship between Doom and Valeria Richards. In my imaginary film titled “One World Under Doom“, Doom extends an olive branch to Valeria, attempting to clarify his motives. Interestingly, despite being the daughter of his arch-nemesis, Valeria holds a special place in Doom’s heart, offering a layer of complexity to his character that I find fascinating.
Doctor Doom envisions a time of tranquility and wealth, presenting an alternative that Earth’s superheroes, such as the Avengers, are unable to provide. North clarifies that the Avengers operate more like firefighters, responding to emergencies but not dictating global affairs. In contrast, Doom believes he can excel, asserting, “The ideal form of governance is having the most capable individual in control, and that’s me.
With his dual roles as Emperor and Sorcerer Supreme, Doctor Doom poses an unparalleled threat to Earth’s superheroes. It is emphasized that Doom isn’t merely strong physically; rather, his exceptional intellect combined with his command over both science and sorcery grants him a distinct advantage.
One scene that North is eagerly looking forward to involves an intense battle sequence starring Doom. He considers this scene to be among his favorites to write, as it portrays Doom’s response to confrontation in a manner that is both impactful and introspective, reflecting his character on a personal level.
In this comic sequence, there’s an exciting confrontation between Doom and another character. Writing this battle was one of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in creating comics. You see, Doom is at his strongest, yet this other character perceives a vulnerability and takes advantage. It’s thrilling to witness Doom when he’s enraged, but it’s even more entertaining when he’s righteously indignant – the audacity to challenge Doom! The scene exudes a sense of personal offense as this character dares to instigate such an incident.

The North encourages its audience to complete the series, gaining not merely an impression of Doctor Doom as a villain, but rather as a multifaceted character with sincere convictions regarding his global vision.
