I’ve always been terrible with names, but there’s no denying that if a nation full of us existed, Jay Pritchett himself, Ed O’Neill, would be our undisputed leader. He has this knack for making forgettable faces memorable, and I can only dream of possessing such a talent!
Let’s take a trip back to the year 2018 when the actor made an appearance on The Ellen Show. During this visit, he was playfully challenged by the then-host, who has since retired, in a game where she asked him to identify famous celebrities based on their pictures.
In our chat, Ellen DeGeneres and Sean O’Neill had me, Ariana Grande, on the screen behind them. I was thrilled when Sean managed to pronounce my name accurately during their conversation.
Besides Beyoncé, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Hemsworth, and Ryan Gosling, other icons on the list didn’t have the same fortune as Grande, since despite putting a great deal of effort into remembering their names, O’Neill still couldn’t recall them correctly.
Attempting to recognize Beyoncé, the individual strangely started by asking, “Could that be a Kardashian?” He subsequently referred to someone who seemed like Jennifer (possibly JLo) before eventually calling out her accurate name.
It’s evident that O’Neill vividly remembered Reese Witherspoon receiving an Oscar, yet, due to his poor memory for names, he struggled to recall it correctly.
In an amusing incident, Chris Hemsworth was mistaken for a Jonas Brother by actor Brendan O’Neill. However, despite this initial confusion, O’Neill later paid Hemsworth a flattering compliment, comparing his looks to young Brad Pitt. After being unsuccessful in getting help from his daughter, who is a fan of Hemsworth, and multiple attempts, O’Neill finally conceded. Eventually, talk show host Ellen DeGeneres brought Thor, played by Hemsworth, to meet him.
On another occasion, when asked to recognize Ryan Gosling, O’Neill initially thought of the Jonas Brothers but eventually gave up after his daughter refused to provide assistance.
Apart from Grande, Meghan Markle (or more specifically, her surname) was the sole celebrity on DeGeneres’ list that O’Neill could recall by name.
Prior to engaging in a lively game with DeGeneres – enjoyable for spectators but nerve-wracking for him – O’Neill had not identified Britney Spears at the airport when she requested a photo. Similarly, he failed to recognize Taylor Swift at a birthday party and sent a selfie of them to his daughter, asking her to help identify the singer.
