Jenny Han Reveals She Wrote Handwritten Note to Taylor Swift to Feature Her Music in The Summer I Turned Pretty

Jenny Han has long aspired for one of Taylor Swift’s songs to feature in The Summer I Turned Pretty, the upcoming third installment of the Amazon Prime series adapted from her beloved novels.

In a recent interview with Jenna Bush Hager’s Open Book podcast on January 9th, the creator and co-showrunner of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, who also executive produced two of the movies in the series, shared the real-life story behind the memorable music scene from the show.

In the final episode of the 2022 premiere season, Conrad, portrayed by Christopher Briney, unexpectedly takes to the dance floor with Belly, played by Lola Tung, during her debutante ball. A long-anticipated romantic scene for the duo unfolds as Taylor Swift’s song “The Way I Loved You” begins to play.

Han, aged 44, revealed that she had already decided on the suitable tune for a specific scene during her pitch sessions for the entire season, and she was prepared to go to great lengths to secure it.

I, utterly captivated by Amazon Music’s emissary, felt compelled to pen a heartfelt missive to Taylor Swift, aged 35, requesting her gracious consent to incorporate her enchanting melodies in my upcoming cinematic masterpiece.

She composed a personal letter by hand, expressing how significant it would be – not only for me, but also for the fans. That was the special present she desired to offer, since she believed that the fans would be thrilled when they heard about it.

Swift ultimately gave permission, and Taylor’s Version of the Fearless song was used.

Following this, the pop star’s song was regularly played on the program, with more than a dozen of her songs appearing across the first two seasons. Some of the standout tracks were Delicate, Back to December, and This Love.

Han expressed that Swift seemed to support and believe in women, and he felt included among them. He is deeply grateful for her allowing them to use her music in their production, and he believes she understands that her fans would appreciate the show as well.

You can watch Seasons 1 and 2 of “The Summer I Turned Pretty” on Amazon Prime Video right now. Looking forward to the summer of 2025 for the premiere of Season 3!

In addition to the previously mentioned performers, we find Gavin Casalengo, Rain Spencer, and Sean Kaufman taking on significant roles within the show.
