Bret Easton Ellis Doubts Austin Butler’s Role in ‘American Psycho’ Remake: “Fake News” or Real Deal?

Previously, Variety announced that Austin Butler will take the lead role in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming adaptation of ‘American Psycho’, based on Bret Easton Ellis‘ novel, for Lionsgate. Despite whispers suggesting Jacob Elordi would be cast as Patrick Bateman, it was ultimately Butler who got the part. Both actors have previously played different incarnations of Elvis Presley in films by Sofia Coppola and Baz Luhrmann respectively.

The movie will showcase a screenplay penned by Scott Z. Burns, and it’s important to note that it’s not a rehash of the 2000 film, but rather a new interpretation based on Ellis’ book.

Now that Easton Ellis himself is challenging these latest rumors, things have become significantly more complex.

In an episode of The Bret Easton Ellis Podcast, the author of ‘American Psycho’ expressed doubts about Austin Butler being cast as Patrick Bateman in the upcoming movie, referring to reports about it as “misinformation.” He clarified, “I get the feeling it might be misinformation… At this point, Austin Butler hasn’t agreed to play Patrick Bateman. As far as I know, Luca Guadagnino and Scott Burns haven’t secured any deals yet either.

Ellis made a point that the information could’ve been shared to observe public reaction. He also clarified, “If it does indeed exist, I have no part in it… I don’t play any role in it. I might benefit financially if they proceed, but I’m not creatively involved in any capacity.

It’s surprising since Variety is known for its credibility, but Bret Easton Ellis’ remarks align with Jeff Sneider’s statement. According to Sneider, the announcement seems less about a real upcoming film and more about making Lionsgate appear more appealing as a potential acquisition target on financial documents.

As a devoted cinephile, I’m eagerly waiting for the official confirmation about Austin Butler being cast as the serial killer in the upcoming movie. Insiders hint that an offer is imminent, so fingers crossed!

Director Luca Guadagnino has just wrapped up the filming of ‘After the Hunt’ starring Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield. Previously, his films ‘Queer’ and ‘The Challengers’ earned Golden Globe nominations. Daniel Craig was nominated for best actor for ‘Queer’, while Zendaya received a nomination for best actress in ‘The Challengers.’
