During the airing of “The Penguin” on HBO, a widely-discussed fan theory suggested that Dr. Julian Rush, Sofia Falcone’s psychiatrist at Arkham, might have been hiding his identity as the Scarecrow, one of Batman’s arch-nemeses. Since in the comics, Dr. Jonathan Crane worked at Arkham before using fear toxin to become a supervillain, it was speculated that Julian Rush could be an alias for Jonathan Crane. However, during an interview on the Golden Globes red carpet (as reported by Screen Rant), showrunner Lauren LeFranc effectively debunked this theory, making it clear that Dr. Julian Rush is not the Scarecrow in “The Penguin.
Well, I can say he’s not the Scarecrow.
Unfortunately, it seems Dr. Rush won’t be portraying the Scarecrow in Matt Reeves’ Batman universe as initially speculated by fans. The Scarecrow, who made his debut in World’s Finest Comics #3 in 1941, is a classic villain in Batman’s rogues gallery and has been a recurring character since the late ’60s. He’s appeared in various animated forms across shows like Super Friends and Batman: The Animated Series, even presenting Batman’s origin story for the first time outside of comics in an episode of Super Friends in 1985.
In the initial Batman films directed by Tim Burton and Joel Schumacher, Scarecrow didn’t make an appearance. However, had there been a third Schumacher Batman movie, Scarecrow would have been the main antagonist. He made his cinematic first appearance in 2005’s “Batman Begins”, portrayed by Cillian Murphy. He also appeared in “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises”. Despite this, he has never been the primary villain in a live-action Batman project. It is possible that Julian Rush, who played The Penguin, was not given the chance to play Scarecrow because Matt Reeves has plans for him. Given how well Reeves handled both The Penguin and The Riddler, we are eager to see his interpretation of Gotham City’s terror mastermind.
