‘Battle Angel Alita: Mars Chronicle’ Manga Is Back After 10-Month Hiatus

The creator of Alita: Battle Angel, Yukito Kishiro, has been toiling away on his manga Mars Chronicle for quite some time now. After taking a break of ten months, the manga is once again available! A fresh chapter dropped today on the Comic Days app, published by Kodansha, bringing an end to the long wait fans have had for new content.

After publishing Chapter 52, this marks the most recent chapter release since March 2024. This follows a blog post by Kishiro in January 2024 revealing that he had finished writing chapters 47 to 51, which were published by Kodansha last year, from January through March.

By November 2024, Kishiro unveiled that the manga’s 56th and concluding chapter has been completed. However, here’s an interesting tidbit—he hinted at the story resuming under a fresh title later in the same year.

The comic series “Mars Chronicle” debuted in Kodansha’s “Evening” magazine way back in 2014. The tenth collected volume of this manga is scheduled for release in Japan next year, April 2024.

The narrative revolves around Gally, often referred to as Alita in English, who is a cyborg with an enigmatic past. In her journey, she goes to Mars to discover more about herself. Following the discontinuation of Evening magazine in 2023, Mars Chronicle shifted over to Kodansha’s Comic Days platform.

The manga series by Kishiro titled “Battle Angel Alita,” or “Gunnm,” boasts a rich and extended history. From 1990 to 1995, it was serialised in Shueisha’s magazine, Business Jump. Afterward, a prequel called “Ashen Victor” was published from 1995-1996. Subsequently, the collection of short stories titled “Gunnm: Other Stories” was released as a single volume. In the year 2001, the narrative was revisited in a series called “Last Order.” Initially published, it was later moved to Kodansha’s Evening magazine due to some disagreements with Ultra Jump.
