The iconic game, Minecraft, requires no introduction; it’s undeniably one of the most widely played video games ever created and ranks as the highest-selling game of all time with over 300 million copies sold – a figure nearly equivalent to the total population of the United States. However, envisioning what a sequel, Minecraft 2, might entail is an intriguing question. It seems we may soon get a glimpse into this spiritual successor… or so it appears. The original creator of Minecraft, Markus Persson (also known as Notch), has hinted at the potential development of Minecraft 2 through his social media posts. While he may not be eager to develop a traditional sequel, if there’s demand from fans, he will consider it.

On his Twitter account, Notch expressed a plan for his upcoming game, which is expected to be a blend of traditional roguelike games (such as ADOM and Nethack) with tile-based first-person dungeon crawlers (like Legend of Grimrock and Eye of the Beholder). However, he pondered whether there might be fans who appreciate his work but aren’t fond of retro nostalgia and would rather have a sequel to Minecraft. He admitted that he wouldn’t mind earning such income, but then he shared a poll. Unsurprisingly, the option for “Minecraft 2” received overwhelming support.

In summary, Notch, in a subsequent post, mentioned something along the lines of “I’ve essentially hinted at the possibility of Minecraft 2.” He expressed his delight at the idea that people might be interested in another game similar to the first one, and he’s back to enjoying game development. However, he doesn’t have a specific game in mind yet (or even multiple ones), but he knows he’ll create one. So, he suggested he might be open to developing a spiritual successor to Minecraft and conducted a poll about it. Notch did mention that spiritual successors often don’t live up to their potential, which could also apply to the potential Minecraft sequel. Nevertheless, financial considerations might still push the project forward.

Essentially, whatever game Notch creates won’t be a direct follow-up or sequel to Minecraft as he sold Minecraft and Mojang, the studio behind it, to Microsoft in 2014. Since then, there have been no announcements about spinoffs or sequels to Minecraft, although a live-action movie is on its way. However, the title itself doesn’t necessarily define what Notch might create next, as he hasn’t shared many details about his potential spiritual successor or follow-up game to Minecraft. He has hinted that he would develop a similar game based on what he believes the audience who desires such a game would enjoy, and he plans to release it in early access stages to ensure they are on the right track.
