Astro Bot is Stealing the Spotlight with Record-Breaking Game of the Year Wins

From the get-go, Astro Bot has been an exceptional game that immediately grabbed our attention. Some of us were smitten from the first trailer, while others became fans as soon as they began playing. Now, this charming platformer is garnering “Game of the Year” accolades at a rate that took everyone by surprise.

The tracking website for Game of the Year (GOTY) awards shows that Astro Bot has amassed a total of 104 awards, making it the platformer with the most awards ever received. Although it doesn’t quite surpass Elden Ring’s all-time record, it significantly outperforms its previous record holder, It Takes Two, which garnered 88 awards in 2021.

Astro Bot’s triumph isn’t merely a coincidence due to favorable timing. Historically, top-tier platform games have encountered formidable challenges from other genres. For instance, Super Mario Odyssey bagged just 37 awards in 2017, primarily because it was up against The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Without BOTW in the picture, Odyssey might well have amassed more accolades and potentially rewritten gaming history.

In this tracking site we’re using, it only dates back to 2013, a year before The Game Awards officially started with Geoff Keighley. Although earlier years are being included later, it’s unlikely that an older platformer like Astro Bot will overtake its position. Games such as Super Mario Galaxy 2 might have won some awards, but the number of available awards was smaller back then.

Astro Bot’s remarkable journey may still continue to unfold. In the upcoming weeks of award ceremonies, there’s a chance it could gather even more prizes. Currently, it trails Death Stranding’s 2019 total by only 15 awards. Regardless of whether it surpasses that record or not, one thing is certain: this tiny bot has left its mark in the annals of gaming.
