At the Golden Globes held in 2025, Jacques Audiard’s film Emilia Pérez was honored with the award for Best Picture in the Musical or Comedy category. This Netflix production is a crime musical that tells the story of a drug cartel member who embarks on a journey to live as a trans woman while simultaneously attempting to sever ties with the cartel.
At the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, this movie premiered, generating mixed opinions. Critics admired its daring style, yet they found themselves at odds regarding its implementation.
In a stunning victory, Zoe Saldaña was awarded Best Supporting Actress at the event, edging out her fellow cast member Selena Gomez and Broadway sensation Ariana Grande. Saldaña’s captivating performance was the standout moment of the evening.
In his heartfelt speech, Audiard explained, “Since I don’t have any sisters, it could be the reason I crafted a movie about sisterhood. Perhaps if the world had more sisters, it would be a kinder and more understanding place.
In addition to winning Best Picture and Saldaña’s award, Emilia Pérez also received accolades for Best Original Song and Best Non-English Language Film.
These triumphs firmly established the movie as a strong contender for accolades during award season. The musical had been eagerly awaited following its screenings at film festivals such as Cannes, Telluride, and Toronto.
Audiard shared with IndieWire that the film’s genesis was rooted in an opera idea, and this operatic influence can still be seen running through its core. He noted, “The operatic approach gave rise to a particular style that is deeply ingrained within the project.” He attributed music and dance for intensifying the emotional resonance of the narrative.
