At any esteemed award ceremony it attends, Shōgun consistently impresses audiences and secures its importance. This trend continued at the 2025 Golden Globe Awards on January 5, as the highly-regarded television series took home two prestigious awards: Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Supporting Role in a TV Series for Tadanobu Asano, and Best Male Actor in a TV Drama for Hiroyuki Sanada.
In the competition, Asano emerged victorious, outshining his fellow nominees such as Javier Bardem, Harrison Ford, Jack Lowden, Diego Luna, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach. On the other hand, Sanada overcame tough competitors like Donald Glover, Jake Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Eddie Redmayne, and Billy Bob Thornton to claim the top spot.
During his acceptance speech, Sanada encouraged the youthful acting community to remain true to who they are and persistently pursue their aspirations.
Meanwhile, Asano appeared modest beyond expectation when accepting his award. Kicking off his speech, he identified himself as “a Japanese actor,” before giving his full name. It turned out that he was taking a brief respite from filming and planned to return to set the next day. However, he chose not to disclose the specific project he was involved in.
“This is a very big present for me,” he excitedly told the crowd, who echoed his energy.
2024 saw Shōgun winning an impressive 18 trophies at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards. The makers announced a second season for this historical drama last year, with filming set to commence in 2025.
