Ben Schwartz Wants to Bring DCU’s Plastic Man to Life: “It would be a dream come true”

Ben Schwartz, who voices Sonic in “Sonic the Hedgehog 3,” is now aiming for a fresh character: Plastic Man within the DC Universe. In a recent question-and-answer session, Schwartz voiced his enthusiasm about the opportunity to make Plastic Man real under James Gunn’s guidance.

When someone on social media platform X inquired about the possibility of the role, Schwartz responded with excitement. “It would be a fulfillment of my dreams,” he stated. “Regardless of who lands the role, I’m eager to witness Plastic Man appearing vibrantly. James is doing an incredible job with everything. He’ll knock it out of the park. And I’ll be among the first to purchase a ticket.

It would be an absolute joy to see that role fulfilled. Regardless of who they cast, I’ll find delight in seeing the character brought to life in a grand and entertaining manner. James is absolutely immersed in everything related, and he’s sure to deliver an outstanding performance. I can’t wait to grab my ticket as soon as it goes on sale!

Schwartz has previously expressed his interest in campaigning for the role. As far back as March 2023, he shared his fascination with Plastic Man during an interview with CBR. In his own words, “I’m genuinely drawn to Plastic Man because I find him amusing. The allure lies in its abundance of humor. It’s about a crook who doesn’t instantaneously reform. He gains powers and, as I imagine it, continues to misuse them for a while longer until external pressures compel him to make the right decision.

Schwartz’s affection for Plastic Man dates back quite some time. As recently as 2018, he shared a GIF of the character with a light-hearted comment: “Am I qualified to play Plastic Man? Is there an application form, or can I simply don the costume and poke fun at Stretch Armstrong?

In the year 1941, the character known as Plastic Man or Patrick “Eel” O’Brian made his debut in Police Comics #1, created by Jack Cole. Originally belonging to Quality Comics, he joined the DC Comics universe in 1956. Recognized for his unique powers of elongation and shape-shifting, Plastic Man has graced numerous animated shows, but so far, he hasn’t yet appeared on live action screens.

2024 saw buzz grow around the possibility of a Plastic Man movie as James Gunn fueled fan theories regarding DC Universe projects on social media. He playfully hinted, “At least one of these isn’t accurate. Enjoy trying to figure it out!

Among the whispers circulating, there were mentions of planned movies for Teen Titans, Sgt. Rock, and Plastic Man, as well as updates on the cast for “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”. Since then, a Teen Titans movie and a Sgt. Rock film have been verified, and the casting for Supergirl’s character named Ruthye has been disclosed publicly.

It’s plausible that the Plastic Man story could be true, despite James Gunn denying the involvement of director Darren Aronofsky in the project.

Should Plastic Man make it to the movies, Schwartz might encounter rival contenders. While John Mulaney, another much-loved candidate for the part, has exhibited a hint of enthusiasm, it’s not as intense as some might hope.

In November 2024, during GQ’s “Actually Me” series, Mulaney humorously questioned, “Is Plastic Man a DC character? If you can answer this, feel free to contact me directly. It seems these films offer substantial pay, but the financial landscape of today’s dynamic media industry is undergoing change.

Regardless of who plays the role, spectators are eager to find out if Plastic Man will ultimately appear onscreen for the first time in a live-action production.
