Jason Momoa Cast As Lobo In James Gunn’s DCU For ‘Supergirl’

It seems that James Gunn’s DC Universe has chosen Jason Momoa for the character of Lobo, a part that Momoa himself stated was his dream role.

News: It’s been announced that Jason Momoa will play the role of Lobo in the upcoming series “Supergirl”, set to begin filming on January 13, 2025. James Gunn has also expressed his welcome for Momoa on his social media post and confirmed it’s for “Supergirl”. This update comes from Gunn’s Instagram Story.

“They called”

Initially, Momoa hinted at significant announcements on his Instagram Story, followed by a post that elaborates on comments he made about Lobo during an interview in December of 2023 at a screening for “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.” Here’s the complete statement:

“During our conversation back then, I said my goodbyes to the DC Universe as far as Arthur Curry, Aquaman, is concerned. However, I’m excited to share that there might still be a role for another character in this universe that I’ve always been fond of – Lobo.

Hey there! Once upon a time, I was an avid collector of comics, and among all the characters, Lobo has always been my favorite. The thought of playing him seemed like a match made in heaven for me. Now, if they were to reach out and ask me to play this role, let’s just say it would be a resounding yes! But, honestly, I haven’t received that call yet, so I don’t want to create any false expectations. However, should they ever invite me for an audition or offer the part, I’d be more than ready to step up to the plate. We really need this now, more than ever!

He commented on the post, “They called.”

Cast as Lobo for Supergirl

In October of 2023, there were reports that the casting of Jason Lobo as Lobo was finalized, and he would no longer portray Aquaman.

It’s been confirmed that ‘Supergirl’ will begin filming shortly; it’s set for release on June 26, 2026. There have been rumors suggesting Lobo will make an appearance in the movie. Interestingly, the comic book adaptation initially intended to feature Lobo, but writer Tom King revealed his editors persuaded him against using the character. Now, since Tom King is consulting with Gunn and the DC Universe, there’s a possibility they might be incorporating DC’s most prominent figure this time around – DC’s Main Main.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow details

Titled “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,” this upcoming film features Milly Alcock in the lead role as Supergirl, Eve Ridley playing Ruthye Marye Knoll, and Matthias Schoenaerts portraying the antagonist Krem of the Yellow Hills. Craig Gillespie is helming the project, with the script penned by Ana Nogueira.

In October during the New York Comic-Con, Gunn stated, “Ana and Craig, our writer and director, are doing an outstanding job leading this project. We’ll begin filming in England in January. I can’t help but share it, though I’m not sure if I should – I just got a sneak peek at the screen test for Ruthye, featuring Milly Alcock, who will be playing Supergirl.

He went on to say, “Anna walked in and presented her idea for Supergirl’s story, which turned out to be one of the best pitches I’ve ever encountered. Right away, she jotted it down, and from that initial draft, it’s only improved more and more.

Gunn stated, “Craig has been an absolute joy to collaborate with. I’m eagerly anticipating the release of that project. The story draws heavily from Tom King’s comic, ‘Woman of Tomorrow.’ While there are changes due to its three-act structure, it maintains the key characters and themes. Supergirl is in a bit of a mess right now, but I can’t wait for everyone to see it. I believe this interpretation offers a fresh, unique spin on the superhero genre.

Edgier version

Previous reports suggest that Milly Alcock’s portrayal of Supergirl will present a grittier take, as it’s been mentioned that the DCU aims to depart from the character as portrayed by Melissa Benoist on The CW. Additionally, there are indications that Krypto the Superdog will appear in this film, making his debut in Gunn’s upcoming Superman project.

In the latest version of events, Supergirl embarks on a galactic journey to celebrate her 21st birthday with Krypto, her super canine companion. During this voyage, she encounters a young woman named Ruthye and finds herself unwillingly entangled in a vengeful pursuit for retribution.

Previously on social media, Gunn expressed that Milly Alcock was his initial choice for this role, suggested to Peter over a year ago even before delving into the comics. While watching “House of the Dragon,” he felt she could possess the required elegance, finesse, and authenticity for the part.
