As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I’ve witnessed the evolution of gaming from simple 8-bit pixels to immersive virtual worlds. Brendan Greene’s vision for Artemis, a vast digital universe where we can create and share our own worlds, resonates deeply with me as a gamer.
Greene’s ambition to develop a platform that functions like the internet itself is truly inspiring. I remember the early days of the World Wide Web, when it was just an empty space filled with endless possibilities. If Greene can harness that same spirit and create a digital universe that mirrors the connectedness and creativity of the web, we’re in for something truly groundbreaking.
However, as someone who has seen the challenges faced by platforms like Roblox, I’m curious to see how Greene will address issues like moderation, copyright infringement, and protecting audiences. It’s a tall order, but if anyone can pull it off, it’s Greene – the man behind PUBG, one of the most successful battle royale games in history.
In the meantime, I’ll be keeping a close eye on other platforms like Fortnite and ‘Everywhere’ by Build A Rocket Boy. They too are aiming to create user-led creativity platforms, but it remains to be seen who will emerge as the true king of the digital jungle.
As for my joke, I can’t resist: If Brendan Greene succeeds in creating Artemis, I guess we’ll finally have an answer to the age-old question: “What if the internet was a game?” The answer might just be: “Artemis.
Brendan Greene, the mind behind ‘PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ (PUBG), is planning to construct a massive digital realm named ‘Artemis’. He envisions it as a 3-dimensional version of the internet, where users can craft and exchange their unique worlds. However, Greene acknowledges that he has not yet defined the appearance or operation of Artemis.
Greene recognizes that ‘metaverse’ is currently a popular term, but he thinks existing projects are essentially separate intellectual property spheres that may link up down the line. However, his vision for Artemis is different – it aims to function similar to the internet, where each world corresponds to a webpage, and all follow the same set of rules or protocols.
Artemis is anticipated to be developed over a span of 10 to 15 years. Prior to dedicating all resources to Artemis, Greene’s studio, PlayerUnknown Productions, intends to launch two other games. At present, they are engaged in creating ‘Prologue’, a survival game that could potentially leverage some of the world-generation tech initially meant for Artemis.
Regardless of the extended timeline and limited specifics, Greene remains optimistic about his concept. He draws an analogy between the early phases of the internet, which started off with little content, and the potential initial stages of Artemis. He is convinced that, given enough time, the potential of such a world-generating system will become evident.
Nonetheless, Greene fails to elaborate on the methods for moderating user-generated content or addressing issues such as copyright violations. Moreover, it remains unclear what unique features Artemis will possess that distinguish it from established platforms like Roblox, which encourage user creativity but grapple with protecting their user bases.
Currently, other businesses are also working on building comparable platforms. For instance, Fortnite offers the Unreal Editor for Fortnite, which allows users to create custom content. Notably, Build A Rocket Boy’s upcoming game ‘Everywhere’ is being touted as a platform for designing mini-games, much like ‘Dreams’ on PlayStation, but with an emphasis on multiplayer features.
Although Greene’s idea for Artemis is grand, it remains conceptual at this point. As we move forward with its development, additional specifics will become crucial in showing how it will stand out among current platforms and tackle potential hurdles.
