As a devoted fan, I have always admired Ed O’Neill’s comedic prowess, from his hilarious antics in Modern Family to his iconic role in Married… with Children. However, it was surprising and intriguing to learn about the public spat between O’Neill and Amanda Bearse, a fellow cast member from Married… with Children.
Reflecting on their relationship, I can only imagine the camaraderie they shared during the filming of the show and the laughter that must have echoed through the set. Yet, it seems that something happened, possibly due to a disagreement over being featured on the TV Guide cover, which ultimately led to a rift between them.
Listening to O’Neill’s account on Dinner on Me, I felt a sense of empathy for him as he recounted his feelings of regret and the wish that things had turned out differently between him and Bearse. As fans, we can only hope that their friendship will one day be rekindled, and we may once again see the chemistry they shared on screen.
In a lighter note, I find it amusing to think about two such iconic characters, Jay Pritchett (played by O’Neill) and Mitchell Pritchett (portrayed by Ferguson), sharing the screen in Modern Family. If only Jay could have used his stern yet lovable demeanor to broker peace between Bearse and Garrison back in their Married… with Children days! Perhaps they would have all ended up at JAY-Tonic Bar for a round of cocktails, laughing it out over old times. Only time will tell if these two legends of sitcom history will find their way back to each other’s good books.
In various appearances, Ed O’Neill has consistently brought laughter to audiences, from Modern Family to the beloved and nostalgic sitcom Married… with Children. Despite maintaining a strong relationship with his ABC sitcom colleagues over the years, O’Neill recently reminisced about a public disagreement he had with one of his co-stars on Married… with Children.
Speaking of the mentioned celestial body, it turns out that the star is not just any star but none other than Amanda Bearse. In an episode of his podcast, “Dinner on Me,” hosted by Ed O’Neill, he spoke about her.
Ed O’Neill shared that despite their current differences, Amanda Bearse and him used to be close friends for a considerable period. However, he speculated that their friendship may have taken a turn around the time they both graced the cover of TV Guide together, possibly indicating the start of their estrangement.
In the past, the actor from “The Little Giants” mentioned that Bearse and David Garrison lived as neighbors. However, due to a rule limiting the number of people, they were both excluded from appearing on the cover together.
O’Neil went on to clarify that Bearse and Garrison had previously broken the rule for two episodes, allegedly for MASH and Dallas. He added, though, that this could be dismissed since at that time, they weren’t yet associated with Married… with Children.
As O’Neill eagerly awaited his appearance on the TV Guide cover, he found himself in the company of Bearse and Garrison, who emerged from their dressing room. On the soundstage, Bearse asked O’Neil to inform Ron Leavitt (co-creator) that all the actors would grace the cover.
As a seasoned journalist with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that rejections and disappointments are part and parcel of our profession. It’s never easy to see someone’s hard work go unrecognized, but it’s important to remember that the media industry is fiercely competitive.
In this situation, O’Neil’s response was firm yet empathetic. He acknowledged their feelings of frustration and disappointment while also being transparent about the limitations of his influence. His refusal to make false promises was a testament to his integrity as a journalist.
Moreover, O’Neil’s words underscored an essential truth in journalism: there are always more compelling stories out there waiting to be told, and it’s not always possible to feature every deserving individual or group. It’s a tough reality, but one that we must accept as professionals in this field.
Ultimately, O’Neil’s response was an example of professionalism under pressure, and it serves as a valuable lesson for all of us in the journalism industry. We must always strive to be honest with our sources and audiences while maintaining the highest ethical standards in our work.
In case you’re not aware, Ferguson and O’Neil, who previously acted together on Modern Family, portrayed characters Jay Pritchett and Mitchell Pritchett.
