New ‘Superman’ Comic Connects The Past and the Present Through – Doomsday!

As a long-time follower of the Man of Steel, I can confidently say that this latest storyline has me buzzing with excitement. The introduction of the Aftermath feels like a brilliant addition to the rich tapestry of Superman’s universe. Their connection to Calaton and Doomsday‘s past adds depth to the narrative, making it feel fresh yet familiar.

In the upcoming issue #21 of Superman (2023) penned by Joshua Williamson and illustrated by Dan Mora, Superman is on edge knowing that Doomsday might soon break free from confinement at Supercorp. This tension looms over every aspect of his life, even a peaceful evening out with Lois Lane. Prior to this critical juncture, a new enigmatic adversary emerges, self-proclaimed as the Aftermath, who demands that Doomsday be handed over to them.

Immediately upon their appearance, The Aftermath’s attire catches the eye. They assert that it is ceremonial in nature, but it bears a striking resemblance to the suit worn by Doomsday when he debuted in Superman: The Man of Steel issue #18, penned by Louise Simonson, Jon Bogdanove, and Dennis Janke in 1991.

In those days, I found myself awestruck by Doomsday, clad in an enigmatic extraterrestrial armor that crumbled under intense combat. Beneath it lay a grotesque figure that left us all speechless, yet the function of the suit remained a mystery in the initial storyline.

In the comic “Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey” (1994), written by Dan Jurgens and illustrated by Brett Breeding, it was revealed later on that Doomsday was actually a Kryptonian biological weapon, codenamed ‘The Ultimate’. This weapon was engineered to withstand any conceivable threat.

In response to the Great Extinction wrought by The Ultimate throughout the cosmos, the inhabitants of Calaton managed to vanquish him by entombing his corporeal form in funerary restraints and propelling it into the void. Incidentally, this is the identical attire he donned during his collision with Earth.

It’s now evident that the Aftermath stem from Calaton. They are the offspring of the civilization that thwarted Doomsday in the past, along with those who survived the devastation he wrought. This strong link to Superman’s history enriches the tale significantly. The inhabitants of Calaton could potentially possess the solution to permanently halt Doomsday.

It’s delightful to notice how the latest Superman stories seamlessly connect with classic events such as “The Death of Superman” and Doomsday’s origins. These references don’t feel contrived; instead, they demonstrate a deep appreciation for past narratives while maintaining a fresh perspective. With Aftermath in the mix, this narrative could provide one of Superman’s most exciting confrontations in recent times.
