Sony Executive Reveals Why He Thinks Madame Web And Kraven The Hunter Failed At Box Office

As a lifelong Sony Pictures fan, it’s disheartening to see some of their recent ventures, like Madame Web and Kraven The Hunter, flop at the box office. I’ve seen my fair share of blockbusters, from Men In Black to Spider-Man, and I can confidently say that these movies were not deserving of such harsh criticism.

Regarding the underperformance of Sony’s films like Madame Web and Kraven The Hunter at the box office, there are varying opinions from the audience as well as the CEO of Sony Pictures, Tony Vinciquerra. However, he attributes the poor performance to criticism from the critics.

In conversation with the Los Angeles Times, Vinciquerra explained that Dakota Johnson’s film didn’t do well in cinemas as it received harsh criticism from the media. However, he emphasized that this doesn’t mean the movie is poor; instead, it garnered positive responses on Netflix.

Vinciquerra stated that “For unknown reasons, the media didn’t seem to favor our Kraven and Madame Web film projects, and the critics seemed to tear them apart.

The CEO of Sony Pictures, who is set to leave his post in January, pointed out that a similar strategy was employed by critics when assessing Tom Hardy’s Venom movies, but these films found favor with the public instead. This unexpected audience affection for Venom contributed significantly to its success, despite the critical reviews it received.

Vinciquerra mentioned that Sony Pictures has generally seen positive outcomes with its more recent films; however, he lamented that the latest release, Kraven the Hunter, along with his previous launch, didn’t perform as well as expected. He went on to express puzzlement over this poor performance since he believes the movie itself is not poor quality.

As per a Sony executive’s statement, there seems to be a need for a significant change within the entire Spider-Man universe at Sony. This is partly due to the negative vibe that currently envelops it. He further expressed, “I believe we should reconsider our approach, simply because it appears to be cursed.” Adding, “Releasing another one would face destruction, regardless of whether it’s excellent or poor.

Similarly to Vinciquerra, Emma Roberts, who played in Madame Web, also finds the movie to be good. In an earlier conversation with Variety, she expressed her opinion that “Had it not been for internet culture turning everything into a joke, I believe the response would have been more positive.
