As a seasoned cinephile with over three decades of movie-watching under my belt, I must say that Jon M. Chu’s decision to release an extended version of “Wicked” is a masterstroke. The extra scenes, deleted footage, and sing-along versions of the music tracks will undoubtedly add depth and richness to this beloved story.
Soon, you’ll be able to stream the movie “Wicked” online. In preparation for its digital release, director Jon M. Chu has shared exciting news: there will be additional scenes included in the streaming version that were originally unable to be shown in cinemas.
The filmmaker shared with CBR that the completed version of the film was more extensive than what audiences experienced in cinemas. Originally, the movie ran for approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes. Furthermore, Chu mentioned that the digital edition of the film will last for a full three-hour viewing experience.
Beyond additional scenes, the movie offers bonus content like removed segments, extended conversations, and song lyric versions for the soundtracks. Additionally, you’ll find interviews with Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo incorporated into the online version of the film as well.
During a chat with the media outlet, the director of the fantasy movie disclosed, “Once you’ve arranged all your characters on the stage, it becomes crucial to determine their significance within the story.
He also mentioned, “Given the extended runtime of the film, I felt it was important to ensure proper placement for each scene. Consequently, our team often engages in heated debates about every scene. Is this scene essential? Are we moving too quickly for the audience’s understanding? Should we consider this, that, or another option?
The director revealed that he chose to incorporate various elements in order to offer a distinctive, engaging movie experience for viewers. Jon M. Chu hinted at revealing hidden aspects of Glinda and Elphaba, as well as depicting their strong friendship on screen.
The director remarked, “The emotional scene between Elphaba and Glinda, where Elphaba vows, ‘I won’t abandon you again,’ is exceptionally well-acted. It offers unique insights into both characters that aren’t shown in their relationship elsewhere.
The musical film “Wicked” premiered in cinemas on November 22, receiving rave reviews from both audiences and critics for its talented cast and crew. It’s set to debut on a streaming platform in March 2025.
