James Gunn Confirms He Talked to Zack Snyder About Superman’s Trunks!

As a movie enthusiast with decades of experience under my belt, I must admit that I find the recent developments surrounding the DCU’s Superman film intriguing. James Gunn, a seasoned director known for his knack for breathing life into outsider characters, has taken on the mantle of directing this iconic hero.

Warner Bros. has faced challenges when it comes to its DC Comics characters, particularly since they couldn’t keep pace with Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU). After Zack Snyder‘s DC Universe didn’t pan out as planned, the studio opted for a fresh approach. They tapped James Gunn to steer the ship moving forward.

Together with Peter Safran, Gunn opted to dismantle the previous DC Universe, known as DCEU, and construct a fresh start. This new venture is now referred to as the DCU, and its initial major film will be the Superman movie scheduled for release next year. David Corenswet has been tapped to play the legendary character, yet there remain several uncertainties concerning the production’s progress.

Subsequently, a virtual press gathering, held a short while after the live event in Los Angeles where the trailer was unveiled, disclosed some intriguing details. According to Screen Brief, approximately 50 journalists from Australia, China, and the Asia Pacific region participated via Zoom, and James Gunn fielded several engaging questions!

During the press conference, numerous questions were addressed, yet one particular query stood out. Notably, one of the disclosed details was a fascinating tidbit shared between James Gunn and his predecessor, Zack Snyder, regarding Superman.

As someone who’s known for crafting stories around outcast characters, it might come as a surprise that I decided to direct a film about Clark Kent, a character who isn’t typically an outsider. However, what drew me to this project was the unique perspective it offered on the classic Superman tale, and the opportunity to explore the human side of a superhero – something that resonated deeply with me.

In many aspects, Superman can be considered an outsider, as he originates from another planet. Earlier on, I narrated this very fact to everyone present here. During the process of designing the Superman suit, it was David Corenswet and Juliana, our costume designer, who assisted me in this endeavor.

Initially, it seemed like everything was falling into place, but it featured red trunks which caused much debate. We went back and forth numerous times about these red trunks, even discussing them with Zack Snyder himself. He admitted to having tried countless versions with the red trunks, but never quite achieved the desired result. I understood his predicament.

I hadn’t realized there were trunks available for use. I attempted to utilize them, but I found myself repeatedly removing them. Upon entering the vibrant space, I was taken aback by the sight of the trunks being on, and I exclaimed something like, ‘Wow, this is so colorful! David, what are your thoughts?’ He responded with a smile, ‘I adore it.’ And I replied, ‘Is it really that bright?’ He seemed unfazed and said, ‘Yes, indeed.’

David asked, “Since I’m an extraterrestrial with the abilities to fly, lift structures, and emit lasers from my eyes capable of disintegrating objects, how should I dress so children won’t find me scary?

In my opinion, that’s where the costume originated, as it provided a fresh perspective on the character. Moreover, it became clear that David approached every decision and moment with great seriousness before filming began. Additionally, he wanted to ensure the character wasn’t frightening for children. Frankly, I found that to be an admirable quality that has stayed with me when considering the character ever since.
