As a devoted theater enthusiast with a soft spot for timeless musicals, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming digital release of Wicked! Having grown up with the original Broadway cast recording and seeing the stage production multiple times, I’ve been eagerly anticipating this cinematic adaptation ever since its announcement.
No need to fret if you didn’t catch Wicked’s cinematic magic in theaters; there’s still an opportunity to enjoy the enchantment and spectacle of one of 2024’s biggest blockbusters! The movie adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical made its debut on November 22, but is now set for a digital release.
Because Universal Pictures is handling the distribution of the movie “Wicked”, it’s predicted that viewers can enjoy the film through the Peacock streaming service. Typically, a digital release occurs around three to four months following its theater debut, so fans might be able to stream the movie in February or March 2025.
Luckily, if you can’t hold off until next year, the musical Wicked can be bought or rented digitally on streaming services such as Amazon Prime Video and Apple TV+, approximately 45 to 65 days following its theater debut.
In this version of Wicked, Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo shine as Glinda and Elphaba. Known for directing “Crazy Rich Asians”, Jon M. Chu is at the helm of this production. The movie acts as a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz” and reintroduces some beloved characters from that classic tale.
The movie, ‘Wicked’, narrates the tale of Elphaba’s transformation, initially misunderstood due to her green complexion, into the infamous Witch of the West. In the storyline, a young woman named Elphaba forms an unexpected yet deep bond with Glinda, who strives tirelessly for social acceptance.
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I must say that I’ve been eagerly awaiting the next installment in this two-part series. The first film, with its impressive $520 million global box office haul and status as one of this year’s blockbusters, has certainly fueled my excitement for the sequel!
The upcoming movie, named “Wicked: For Good,” is slated for a theater release on November 21, 2025, as confirmed by Universal Pictures. Alongside Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the illustrious cast includes Jonathan Bailey, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, Jeff Goldblum, Peter Dinklage, Ethan Slater, among others.
In the recently released movie, Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, who first played Elphaba and Glinda respectively in the 2003 Broadway production of “Wicked”, made guest appearances.
