As a seasoned connoisseur of literature and cinema, I find myself both thrilled and intrigued by Christopher Nolan’s ambitious undertaking to adapt Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Having traversed the vast landscapes of time and space in Inception, Interstellar, and Dunkirk, Nolan now embarks on a journey that is as old as Western civilization itself.
Christopher Nolan is set to adapt Homer’s timeless poem, The Odyssey, for a future film with Universal Pictures. This epic tale will be displayed on IMAX screens globally starting July 17, 2026. The movie lineup includes notable actors such as Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Robert Pattinson, among others.
The timeless tale, Homer’s “The Odyssey,” is a foundational work in Western literature. Comprised of 24 sections, this epic narrative recounts the perilous homecoming voyage of King Odysseus from the Trojan War. Throughout its poetic lines, it explores themes like heroism, loyalty, cunning, the concepts of nostos (return), odyssey (journey), xenia (hospitality towards guests), and the constant battle between human ambition and divine destiny. Memorable scenes within this story include Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops, Sirens, Circe, the enchantress-goddess, prior to his reunion with his long-missing wife, Penelope.
Universal Pictures recently utilized their platform, previously known as Twitter, to share the news that “Christopher Nolan’s upcoming movie ‘The Odyssey’ is a mythic action epic, filmed worldwide using groundbreaking IMAX film technology. This film marks the first time Homer’s foundational tale will be shown on IMAX screens and it hits theaters everywhere on July 17, 2026.
Nolan’s film is set to join a succession of screen adaptations based on Homer’s epic tale, The Odyssey. Notable previous versions include the 1954 Italian movie Ulysses starring Kirk Douglas, the 1997 miniseries with Armand Assante, and the recent release, The Return, featuring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. This timeless story has sparked numerous literary masterpieces, such as James Joyce’s Ulysses and Margaret Atwood’s The Penelopiad, to name a few.
In simple terms, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film will be played by a group of talented actors including Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, and Charlize Theron. Filming is slated to commence at the start of next year, marking Nolan’s second project with Universal following the critically praised film “Oppenheimer.
