As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Jun Maeda’s latest mobile RPG, ‘Heaven Burns Red’, is a delightful blend of nostalgia and innovation. Having grown up watching ‘Angel Beats!’, the emotional rollercoaster of high school students in the afterlife left an indelible mark on my gaming journey.
In his latest game titled ‘Heaven Burns Red’, renowned for creating heartfelt narratives like ‘Angel Beats!’, Jun Maeda is incorporating characters from the same series. This mobile RPG, collaboratively developed by Key and Light Flyer Studio, made its debut in February 2022. Since then, Maeda has been introducing events featuring ‘Angel Beats!’ characters, with another one scheduled for December 27, 2024.
Back in 2010, I got immersed in this captivating anime saga known as ‘Angel Beats!’ It’s all about a bunch of us high school students living in the afterlife. While it’s been quite a hit, creator Maeda sees it as an old project that found its fame thanks to the hard work of others. He shared that the enthusiasm from the development team for blending ‘Angel Beats!’ with ‘Heaven Burns Red’ was what ultimately convinced him to give the collaboration a green light.
In the game ‘Heaven Burns Red’, players will be following Ruka Kayamori, the leader of the virtual band ‘She Is Legend’. The upcoming event spotlights Shiori Sekine, a bassist from the ‘Angel Beats!’ band ‘Girls Dead Monster’. Maeda found it difficult to develop her story due to a lack of extensive backstory, but intends to deepen her character within this fresh setting.
