As a dedicated SNL fan with over three decades of following this iconic show, I must admit that Saturday night’s episode was nothing short of magical. The star-studded celebration to honor Martin Short’s induction into the Five-Timers Club brought back memories of laughter-filled evenings spent in front of the television.

2024 saw Saturday Night Live (SNL) wrapping up its yearly episodes in grand style, with an extravaganza packed with big names, as Martin Short made his way into the esteemed “Five-Timers Club”. This exclusive club, which acknowledges hosts who have led the show five times or more, warmly inducted Short through a lively and humorous induction ceremony, graced by familiar faces from previous SNL episodes.

The evening’s festivities were kicked off by Tom Hanks, who helped introduce Short into the exclusive group. Other famous members, including Alec Baldwin, Scarlett Johansson, Tina Fey, and John Mulaney, were also present to congratulate Short and share some hilarious “confessions” about their experiences as multiple-time hosts.

Tina Fey humorously stated, “In our group, you can speak truthfully without reserve,” which resulted in some amusing and outlandish confessions. For example, Paul Rudd teased, “The abilities of Ant-Man aren’t particularly useful,” while Tom Hanks made a light-hearted assertion, saying, “I’ve never contracted COVID-19,” a remark that elicited a swift quip from Scarlett Johansson, who playfully countered, “I’m infected with COVID at the moment!

Behind the scenes, Alec Baldwin, sporting a relaxed and stylish demeanor while holding a cigarette, confessed, “I’ve had far too many kids,” which earned laughter from those around him. In the final act of the skit, Jimmy Fallon presented Short with his official five-timers jacket, causing Short to comically struggle putting it on. He then joined the group in their traditional shoutout, “Live from New York, it’s Saturday night!

Martin Short’s tenure with Saturday Night Live is rich in tradition, spanning back to the 1984-1985 seasons when he was a cast member, and further marked by his first hosting stint in 1986. More recently, he returned as host two years ago, alongside his co-star Steve Martin from Only Murders in the Building. On this occasion, Short has now officially become part of the exclusive club, joining esteemed figures such as Tom Hanks, Emma Stone, and Kristen Wiig who have also graced the SNL stage.

This evening’s program also showcased Hozier’s performance as the musical act, enhancing the festive ambiance of the themed holiday episode.
