As a lifestyle expert with a keen eye for talent and a soft spot for behind-the-scenes stories, I find Sara Paxton‘s recollection of her early encounter with Steve Carell both enlightening and amusing. It’s fascinating to see how a brief interaction on the set of Sleepover foreshadowed the meteoric rise of one of Hollywood’s most beloved comedic actors.
In 2004’s teen comedy Sleepover, Sara Paxton worked alongside Steve Carell. Looking back, she spoke about her initial thoughts of him, praising his comic abilities and acknowledging that she could see his potential, even at a young age.
In Sleepover, Paxton became part of a group that also included Alexa PenaVega, Kallie Flynn Childress, Brie Larson, and Mika Boorem. This movie tells the story of eighth-grade pals whose sleepover transforms into a thrilling scavenger hunt. Carell portrayed Sherman Shiner, a security officer who frequently encountered the girls while they were engaged in their escapades, riding his bike.
Lately, Paxton reminisced about a short interaction she had with Carell when talking to PEOPLE. She said, “In one scene, a doorbell rings at Alexa Vega’s house, and we assume it’s the pizza delivery.” Paxton continued, “I open the door, and there he is. He’s playing a security guard on a bicycle, like Paul Blart. I respond with something casual like, ‘Oh, never mind.’
During the short time they worked together, Paxton observed Carell’s impressive improvisational talents on set. She described him as coming up with humorous lines spontaneously. At just 14 years old, Paxton immediately saw his talent. “I thought, ‘That guy’s going to make it big.’ He was incredibly funny.
Paxton’s intuition was spot-on. Exactly a year later, Steve Carell achieved nationwide fame with the debut of The Office. This marked the beginning of his meteoric rise in the industry, earning him critical praise, including an Oscar nomination, several Emmy nods, and a win at the Golden Globes.
In recent times, Paxton has established a thriving acting profession, reminiscent of her Sleepover days. Notably, she recently appeared in the second season of Peacock’s Based on a True Story, portraying the role of Paige – a character driven by vengeance for her sister’s murder.
Paxton found her time working with the cast enjoyable, even though she initially felt nervous. She likened the experience of filming season two to starting high school or sophomore year again, when everyone has already established friendships, and you’re the fresh face joining the group.
Paxton mentioned that everything changed for the better once she got there, as everyone was exceptionally kind, welcoming, and open-armed.
