Zoe Saldaña Warns Time is Running Out for ‘Star Trek 4’ as Cast Ages: “we need to do this quickly”

As a seasoned Star Trek fan and someone who has grown up with the original cast, it’s been a rollercoaster of emotions watching the development (or lack thereof) of Star Trek 4. I remember the excitement when J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were hired, the intrigue surrounding Quentin Tarantino’s pitch, and the disappointment each time a director dropped out.

Since 2015, the progress of Star Trek 4 has encountered numerous setbacks and alterations. Multiple drafts of the movie have been tried, yet none have proven successful. Originally, J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay were brought on board to pen the script.

Initially, Quentin Tarantino proposed a concept in 2017, but he eventually chose not to take the director’s chair. Since then, several directors such as S. J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, Matt Shakman, among others, have been brought on board, only to step down due to diverse reasons like actor contract issues and scheduling complications.

By March 2024, Steve Yockey is working on a fresh take, referred to as the “final installment,” of the reboot series. However, this project has experienced numerous hurdles. There have been significant challenges with the cast, primarily because of scheduling conflicts and delays, but by 2022, new contracts were secured for the original key players to resume their roles.

Actress Zoe Saldaña, known for her role as Nyota Uhura in ‘Star Trek Beyond,’ has voiced worries about the extended wait for ‘Star Trek 4.’ She fears that if production takes too long, the original cast members might be past the age to reprise their characters effectively.

She mentioned this during an interview while promoting her Golden Globe-nominated performance in ‘Emilia Pérez.’

She expressed her desire for action to happen more immediately, saying, “It would be better if we could get started right away rather than delaying.” Referring to the group, she added, “Given how many of us have aged significantly, there’s a sense of urgency if we plan to bring back this cast again.

In addition to her comments, the actress expressed her desire to delve deeper into her character’s bond with Spock. She hinted at a unique affinity between Uhura and Spock, suggesting that their connection could unfold intriguingly in the upcoming film.

I haven’t caught up with Star Trek and its characters for some time now, but there’s always been a connection between Uhura and Spock that intrigues me. I can’t help but wonder about the development of their relationship, both personally and professionally.

As a passionate Star Trek fan, I’m thrilled to say that even though the movie series seems to be taking a pause, the universe of Star Trek is far from standing still on the small screen. Mark your calendars for January 24, 2025, because Paramount+ will premiere ‘Section 31,’ featuring the talented Michelle Yeoh. And if that’s not enough to get you excited, ‘Strange New Worlds’ Season 3 is on its way, and filming for ‘Starfleet Academy’ is underway, with a projected release date between 2025 and 2026. Can’t wait to boldly go where no one has gone before!
