As a fan who’s been through countless comic book series and survived the zombie apocalypse of Walking Dead, I can confidently say that Vatican City by Dark Horse Comics is something truly unique and thrilling. The idea of vampires taking over the world and only tourists surviving inside Vatican City is a fresh twist on the classic vampire genre that I’ve never encountered before.
Vampires have taken over the world, wiping out every living person. The only survivors? A small group of tourists holed up inside Vatican City. The clock is ticking as they try to hold on while millions of vampires gather outside. How long can they survive?
The storyline for the upcoming comic series, “Vatican City,” comes from Dark Horse Comics. Written by renowned author Mark Millar, who’s famous for his work on “The Magic Order,” it boasts artwork, colors, and covers by Per Berg.
This work offers a fresh perspective on the traditional vampire theme, blending survival horror into the setting of the world’s tiniest nation. Collectors will find two distinct cover designs by artists John McCrea and Per Berg to anticipate with excitement.
Millar has been sitting on this idea for years, as he revealed:
I’ve had this idea for years, Assault on Precinct 13 with vampires, tourists and staff safe behind the holy relics in The Vatican while the rest of the world outside has been taken down by the forces of darkness. I wrote it into The Magic Order as a little subplot in volume 3, but really wanted to flesh it out and tell the whole story.
Vatican City is my big chance. Most exciting of all for me is getting to work with Per Berg. I’ve admired his work for two or three years now and have been itching to get together with him on a project, but this has just surpassed all expectations. It’s the maddest thing I’ve ever written. You’re going to love it.

In this graphic novel, the story revolves around the battles faced by the survivors sheltering within Vatican City. As hordes of vampires encircle the fortifications, time is of the essence. The survivors’ last resort is to conceal themselves until aid comes, but for how long can they withstand an unending wave of vampires? While the undead outside have eternity on their side, the humans within are dwindling in resources and endurance.
In this series, the striking piece by artist Per Berg truly shines. Millar is thrilled about teaming up with Berg, referring to it as one of his best collaborations yet. If you’re familiar with Berg’s work on “Machete Squad”, you’ll get a sense of the raw, intense art style he contributes. This perfectly complements Millar’s gripping storytelling.
The initial comic book series titled “Vatican City #1” is due to hit comic stores on April 9, 2025. It’s available for pre-order at your local store and costs $5.99. Additionally, there are two special edition covers for collectors: one in black and white by Berg, and another variant cover illustrated by McCrea, colored by John Kalisz.
This work offers a distinctive spin on the vampire narrative, blending action, horror, and survival in an extraordinary backdrop. If you’re drawn to edge-of-your-seat tales where characters face overwhelming odds, you won’t want to skip out on Vatican City. With Millar’s exhilarating storytelling and Berg’s captivating artistry, this series is set to deliver a novel and thrilling adventure.
