‘Doctor Who’ Showrunner Russell T Davies and Writer Steven Moffat Reveal More Information About the Upcoming Christmas Special

As a seasoned gamer and long-time fan of Doctor Who, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and nostalgia as I delve into the latest developments surrounding my beloved time-traveling series. The upcoming Christmas episode promises to be an extraordinary affair, with the talented Nicola Coughlan joining forces with Ncuti Gatwa – an absolute delight for fans like me who have followed their respective careers since their humble beginnings in the world of gaming and television.

Fans of science fiction are well-versed in recognizing “Doctor Who” as a timeless series that holds cult status. First airing in 1963, the show has undergone multiple reinventions, with the latest, the fourteenth season, making its debut on May 11, 2024, simultaneously on BBC and Disney. This new season has sparked quite a bit of debate among viewers.

There was much debate and negative reaction from fans when it was decided that Ncuti Gatwa would replace Jodie Whittaker as the main character, known as the Doctor, in the program. However, time has passed, and now we’re looking forward to seeing more developments.

The forthcoming installment of the 2024 Doctor Who series, dubbed “Joy to the World,” is scheduled for release on December 25th, a fitting day for Christmas. To build anticipation for this special event, showrunners Russell T Davies and Steven Moffat have shared insights about the upcoming episode in an interview.

In a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, the creators shared valuable insights about their ongoing project. Here’s a summary of the most intriguing aspects of their conversation:

The Time Hotel is such a great Doctor Who idea, whose was it?

Instead of forcing ideas onto Steven, you might say, “For goodness sake, there’s no need to brainstorm for the Christmas special. I simply requested one!” (Laughs)

You said we were out of ideas, but maybe you had something in mind? Nope, you definitely did.)

DAVIES Well, we did talk about farces, about doing a comedy.

Sure thing!

In a captivating moment, they’re all gathered in the hotel room where multiple doors are constantly being opened. There are actually three doors: one leads to the bathroom, another is the main hotel door…

MOFFAT That’s right and there’s two Doctors and there’s all that.

DAVIES You can see it there. You can see a farce there.

After the “farce” mention, the discussion shifted to that topic:

So, potentially, audiences could still be treated to a Doctor Who farce?

Speaker MOFFAT proposes that the task hasn’t been completed yet. However, he suggests it should ideally occur during the middle of the season. If it were at Christmas, he explains, viewers might feel let down because they’d anticipate something more traditional for that holiday.

DAVIES I don’t know. That’s enough to make me do it!

Maybe as a live stage show?

MOFFAT Yeah, yeah.

DAVIES How about this, mate? Let’s go with “The Mishap of Doctor Who”! Now you’re meant to respond, “Been there, done that!” (Laughs) It sounds like a breeze, doesn’t it? Imagine if we could somehow mix Doctor Who and The Play That Goes Wrong! That’s the start of an exciting concept.

(…)

As a gamer, I’m absolutely ecstatic about the design triumph of our talented creator, Phil Sims, who recently won the RTS [Craft & Design] award. It’s quite unusual for a show like Doctor Who to snatch a designer award, given that there have been many exceptional designers both in my era and yours. However, it often gets overlooked due to assumptions that it’s easy because of the show’s resources. But this time, I couldn’t be more pleased for them. Simply brilliant!

Few TV series can compare to the design-focused nature of Doctor Who, making it an ideal choice for designers. It’s truly remarkable.

Juries rarely appreciate it, do they? They simply nod and say, “Ah, yes, this resembles Dickens’ London. Well done.” Typically, their perception isn’t sharp enough to recognize the exceptional craftsmanship in the design.

REPHRASED They seem to be sitting there, commenting, “This show looks posh, so it must be great. But it’s slow and uneventful, someone is expressing feelings endlessly while gazing out of a window. [Said sarcastically] Oh, that’s just top-notch drama.” [Laughs] Nowadays, such comedy without a single joke in sight, even receives an award.

Finally, an interesting casting detail was also revealed:

As a huge fan, I can’t help but wonder if securing Nicola Coughlan for our Christmas episode guest role was a challenge, considering the incredible heights her career has reached lately.

GAMER Freedom was my jam! She’s an old pal of Ncuti’s acquaintance, someone I’d nod to in passing. To be straightforward, she jumped at the chance we extended, no fuss, no muss. The proposition was casual, and the response was equally so.

Oh, she was an absolute charmer! She exuded warmth and grace. It was a joy to be around her. She radiated pure happiness. Ncuti adored her, and our shoot together was truly enjoyable. In a remarkable turn of events, she gained even more fame after our collaboration. (Chuckles) Yet, her kindness in making an effort for this publicity endeavor stood out.

MOFFAT It was a year-long publicity tour for the Christmas special!

DAVIES In Paris and stuff like that… all in the name of Doctor Who, amazing!
