First SUPERMAN Teaser Trailer Offers Us So Much Hope

As a lifelong comic book enthusiast who’s seen more Superman reboots than I can count on one hand, I must say that this trailer for James Gunn’s 2025 DCU Superman has me absolutely giddy with excitement! The heart and warmth displayed in these two short minutes are a breath of fresh air in a genre often plagued by dark and gritty portrayals.

Without a shadow of a doubt, as a diehard fan, I can’t help but feel the palpable excitement brewing for James Gunn’s Superman in 2025 – a film that, undeniably, promises to be the standout geek movie of the year. This motion picture holds an extraordinary responsibility, being the one to set the stage for the DCU (DC Studios connected universe), defining its unique style, tone, and essence. The first teaser trailer we’ve seen for the DCU’s Superman has me confident that we’re in more than capable hands.

Starting from the initial scene where a wounded Superman (David Corenswet), calling out for Krypto, falls into the arctic, we were hooked. This portrayal of Kal-El, who leans on companions, even canine ones, and strives tirelessly to shield people, often resulting in severe injury, resonates deeply. Unlike some contemporary depictions of Superman, this trailer doesn’t present a god-like figure capable of destroying everything in sight. Instead, it shows us a Superman who stands between the innocent and potential danger, putting himself at risk.

The message becomes even clearer as the trailer reveals Superman rescuing a girl from rubble amidst Metropolis’ monster attack. Moreover, it offers our initial sneak peek into some super-powered characters expected in the film, such as Nathan Fillion’s Guy Gardner with his distinctive hairstyle, Edi Gathegi’s Mister Terrific, and Isabela Merced’s Hawkgirl, each getting a brief screen time. Additionally, we catch glimpses of villains too. Nicholas Hoult portrays Lex Luthor, showcasing his baldness and some intriguing scenes opposite Superman, while Lexcorp’s skyscrapers are prominently featured in the cityscape.

At the closing moments of the Superman trailer, there’s a solitary shot of an individual with a bald head and a somewhat greenish tint. Though not entirely certain, it seems this movie could be centered around none other than Brainiac, who has been whispered about as the hidden antagonist for quite some time. This revelation may also provide insight into the colossal alien vessel/weapon depicted in promotional images and glimpsed elsewhere throughout the teaser trailer. Definitely not Lex this time around.

But amid all of the cool DC Comics shiz we see, one thing really stands out in the teaser trailer. It’s Superman’s, for lack of a better word, humanity. We see him hug his adoptive father (Pruitt Taylor Vince) on the Kent farm. He looks charmingly befuddled in his curly-haired Clark Kent getup at The Daily Planet. And, most importantly, we see Superman opposite Lois Lane (Rachel Brosnahan) a lot in this trailer. Grounding whatever wild thing is happening in the relationships Superman has with people in his life is so important. It’s what makes Superman Superman.

And yes, we get a mix of how society at large feels about him. We see a little boy in what looks like a war-torn area raising a Superman emblem flag juxtaposed with Metropolitans shouting and throwing things at Superman. Universal good is harder to quantify these days. How our hero deals with that is what makes him more than just a thug with powers.

As an ardent fan, I am absolutely thrilled and can hardly contain my excitement for more of this unique Superman portrayal! Mark your calendars, fellow enthusiasts; the DC Universe officially lifts off on July 11, 2025, when Superman takes to the skies once again.
