Philippa Boyens Offers THE HUNT FOR GOLLUM Status Update, Teases Plot of THE LORD OF THE RINGS Movie

As a seasoned gamer and an ardent fan of The Lord of the Rings saga, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming cinematic masterpiece – The Hunt for Gollum! Ever since my first encounter with Middle-earth’s enigmatic denizens, I’ve been captivated by the richness of the lore and the depth of the characters.

The film “The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim” marks our cinematic reentry into the universe envisioned by Peter Jackson for “The Lord of the Rings”. Following this, we eagerly await the arrival of another installment, titled “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum”, which is a much-anticipated addition to the world of “The Lord of the Rings”. In light of “The War of the Rohirrim”, Philippa Boyens, one of the movie’s writers, has shared some insights with us regarding the development of “The Hunt for Gollum” and hinted at potential plotlines and mysteries it may explore within the realm of “The Lord of the Rings”.

When questioned regarding “The Hunt for Gollum,” this is what Boyens expressed in relation to the forthcoming “The Lord of the Rings” movie.

Currently, as I converse with you, we’re deep into the process of crafting “The Hunt for Gollum”. It’s been quite enjoyable and intriguing. At present, it’s fragmented across my dining table. However, what makes it fascinating is the vast amount of story yet to be uncovered, first and foremost. Additionally, when we delve into certain moments from the text, such as the few lines given by Professor Tolkien or subtle clues he’s left us, it’s like exploring a mystery. For instance, we know Aragorn captures Gollum in the Dead Marshes, but how does he trace his scent? How does he follow his trail? These are questions that remain unanswered at this point in time.

We don’t know ourselves, but we promised Boyens we’d have a think. But if you know, it might be a good time to share your ideas with the class. We love the thought of The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum spread all over Boyens’ dining table, though. The process of putting together a new The Lord of the Rings movie sounds like a ton of fun. And we love even more hearing a tease of some of the moments and plot we’ll revisit in the film. Sign us up for more Aragorn, especially in his Strider form. We just didn’t get enough of that in the original The Lord of the Rings‘ trilogy, so it’s fun to imagine we might see a few new scenes of Aragorn in his fully Ranger form in The Hunt for Gollum.

This The Hunt for Gollum tease is also an interesting one because it focuses us in on at least one time period that the new The Lord of the Rings movie will explore. Of course, it makes sense that some of The Hunt for Gollum might take place during the time period after his torture in Mordor and before Aragorn finds him (when Gandalf and Aragorn are, as they say, hunting for him). But that hadn’t been explicitly confirmed. Of course, the movie is in early stages and things could still change, but knowing we’ll explore the time when Aragorn captures Gollum and takes him to Mirkwood (not too much before The Fellowship of the Ring forms) is definitely interesting to note.

Additionally, we find it delightful to imagine “The Hunt for Gollum” providing fresh insights into the mysteries of “The Lord of the Rings” lore where there were once unanswered questions, in our view, this is what makes an excellent adaption.

Previously, I shared thoughts on “The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum,” where I mentioned that Gollum’s narrative is one we’ve always yearned to explore more deeply, which may sound odd given his widespread familiarity. Delving into Gollum’s life story during such an intriguing era of Middle-earth was the first idea that popped up in our minds. Here’s a secret: We never anticipated returning to this world. It wasn’t something we actively pursued, truth be told. So when the opportunity came, it was about collaborating with the talented individuals we had previously worked with. Additionally, the prospect of working with Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy at the studio caught our attention. With Alan Horn back at the studio, everything just felt like it was meant to be.

We can’t wait to hear more about the new The Lord of the Rings movie as it comes to life.
