As a dedicated fan and ally, I can’t help but feel deeply saddened by the turn of events for Cancel Stewart and her character in Disney’s Win or Lose. It’s heartbreaking to see such a groundbreaking opportunity being snatched away due to outdated notions about what young audiences are ready to understand.
Actress Laverne Cox, who identifies as transgender, was chosen to voice a trans teenage character in Disney’s Win or Lose, but sadly the storyline didn’t make it, leaving her feeling let down. In the casting call for Pixar’s animated series, they were seeking a genuine trans girl for the role.
To Deadline, the actress reminisced about her reaction upon seeing the audition specifications, believing she was an ideal fit for the part. “I was everything they were looking for spot on,” she stated, “and that’s why it felt so appropriate. It simply felt incredibly fitting.
She promptly inquired of her mother if she could try out for the part, explaining that it seemed irrational not to do so since she felt strongly about it. Her intuition proved accurate when she eventually secured the role in “Win or Lose,” a story centered around a mixed softball team from a middle school called the Pickles, as they prepare for a major tournament.
She spoke about the chance, saying she had worn it proudly and with respect because it held great significance for her. It reminded her of a badge she was honored to bear. Her desire to secure this role stemmed from a wish to serve as a representative for other transgender kids similar to herself.
A short while later, Disney phoned Keisha, Stewart’s mom, to share that the series had opted to abandon the transgender plotline since it was deemed too delicate for young viewers to handle.
The broadcasting company stated that since most young viewers consume animated content, it is essential for parents to decide when and how their kids are introduced to the concept of LGBTQ+. They acknowledge that many parents prefer to handle such topics at a time and in a manner they find suitable.
Keisha shared with Deadline that she was displeased with the channel’s decision because it was unjust towards her transgender daughter. She emphasized that it was crucial for them not to conceal her real-life identity. Even though some parents may not be prepared to discuss this topic, this is the reality we all inhabit, as expressed by Stewart’s mother.
Stewart expressed her disappointment, but Disney reportedly insisted that despite eliminating her character’s storyline, her character remains significant within the series. “The only change is that my character will now be portrayed as a cisgender girl, specifically straight and cisgender,” she explained. “They simply informed me that I would still be included in the show, and that it’s an incredible privilege to contribute to queer history,” Stewart concluded.
