As a lifestyle expert looking back at the journeys of Jon M. Chu and Shawn Levy, I find myself in awe of their resilience and determination. Their stories are a testament to the fact that success is not a straight line, but rather an ebb and flow of challenges and triumphs.
Jon M. Chu and Shawn Levy are currently thriving in their professions following the direction of two monumental films, “Wicked” and “Deadpool & Wolverine“. Despite surpassing anticipations for both productions, these directors offer a unique perspective on the challenges they encountered during filmmaking.
During a recent chat, the two filmmakers reminisced about their journeys towards achievement, discussed their distinctive filmmaking approaches, and shared insights gained from their various encounters.
Jon M. Chu’s passion for films took root at a young age, fueled by behind-the-scenes glimpses of Hook. This sparked his ambition to become a director, captivated by the notion of spending days engaged in play and creation. However, his journey to success was not without challenges. “My student film miraculously reached Spielberg,” Chu reminisced. “We arranged a script with DreamWorks. My first pitch was with Steven,” he added.
As a lifestyle expert, I’d rephrase it like this: Although my initial success came swiftly, it wasn’t until five years later that I had the opportunity to direct my first film. Reflecting on this journey, I confessed, “I found myself questioning if I truly belonged in this industry during those challenging years.
Looking back at the start of my journey as a director, I must confess, even Shawn Levy had his moments of self-doubt. Particularly when I was given the opportunity to direct The Secret World of Alex Mack – a dream come true! But little did I know that the path to success wouldn’t be a straight line. Instead, it would ebb and flow, guiding me to unexpected destinations that I could never have imagined.
In a similar vein, both filmmakers aren’t unfamiliar with stressful situations. For instance, Jon M. Chu encountered the task of transforming the cherished Broadway production, Wicked, into a motion picture. He emphasized that discovering the ideal cast members was crucial to the movie’s triumph: “If you can’t find them, you won’t produce the film.
Initially focusing on casting novices, Chu later understood that only skilled actors were capable of managing the intricate melodies of the show’s challenging tunes.
Instead of Shawn Levy, in a contrasting situation, experienced a unique form of stress while dealing with Deadpool & Wolverine. As he put it, “The assumption was the pressure would be immense since it was my debut Marvel film.” However, he clarified that this wasn’t the case. For months, they had been diligently working on Deadpool 3, but unfortunately, they couldn’t make it work.
But then, everything shifted when Hugh Jackman proposed the opportunity for him to take part in the film. It was an insightful moment for Levy as he understood that the movie would revolve around themes of friendship, redemption, and a road trip.
