As a diehard DC fan who has spent countless hours poring over comic books and binge-watching every single superhero show and movie, I can confidently say that James Gunn and Peter Safran have my full support for their vision of Superman. Their approach to universe-building is refreshingly focused on storytelling rather than setting up needless cameos or plotlines.
In the upcoming Superman film set to hit theaters next summer, James Gunn, both writer-director and co-head of DC Studios, along with producer Peter Safran, are working hard to make sure the movie can be enjoyed independently without relying too heavily on prior films.
Regarding ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 and the HBO show ‘Lanterns’, even though they might share some connections with the DC Universe, director James Gunn emphasizes that the main storyline for upcoming projects will be centered around Superman’s personal tale.
While I was recently given a behind-the-scenes tour, I had an engaging chat with ComicBook about how I’m planning to weave universe-creating aspects into the projects I’m working on as a gamer.
He remarked, ‘Maybe two little things, two moments that tie into the broader universe. But if it’s just to set something up, forget it.’
He stressed the importance of each element serving the current film’s narrative, with the possibility of cutting anything not directly enhancing this story by the editing stage.
The storyline that falls somewhere in between the animated show ‘Creature Commandos’ and the upcoming season of ‘Peacemaker’, seems to suggest ties or links within the universe of DC Comics.
Significantly, the movie includes Nathan Fillion portraying Guy Gardner as Green Lantern, hinting at potential connections to the forthcoming ‘Lanterns’ series.
In this series, as labeled a detective tale by Gunn and Safran, they are setting the groundwork for the upcoming DC Universe, beginning with Superman.
Gunn made it clear that although the film could pave the way for subsequent stories, similar to ‘Peacemaker’, it would never jeopardize its own authenticity. He stressed, “Each scene within the movie serves solely the purpose of the film itself.
Regarding the characters, ‘Superman’ features David Corenswet in the roles of both Kal-El and Clark Kent, while Rachel Brosnahan takes on the part of Lois Lane. Notably, Nicholas Hoult assumes the role of the main antagonist, Lex Luthor.
In the portrayal, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell represent the Kent family. Alongside them, actors like Skyler Gisondo, Beck Bennett, Mikaela Hoover, Christopher McDonald, and Wendell Pierce are part of the cast, playing members of the Daily Planet staff.
Instead of having a large group of characters like Gunn does in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ or ‘The Suicide Squad’, this movie features important superheroes who play crucial roles as supporting characters, substantially influencing the storyline.
Characters like Mister Terrific (performed by Edi Gathegi) and Hawkgirl (depicted by Isabela Merced) aren’t just brief appearances; instead, they have significant roles that contribute to the evolving plotline.
This movie, initially known as ‘Superman: Legacy’, explores Superman’s struggle to harmonize his Kryptonian roots with his life as the Smallville-raised Clark Kent, while maintaining timeless principles in contemporary times.
In the future, the DC Studios’ collection known as ‘Gods and Monsters’ will feature characters such as Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Clayface, and an animated Dynamic Duo. Other projects like The Authority, Swamp Thing, and Batman: The Brave and the Bold have not been given release dates yet.
As a devoted fan, I’m thrilled to share that upcoming TV projects are set to broaden the DC universe in an exciting way. These include ‘Lanterns’, ‘Waller’, ‘Booster Gold’, and the intriguing ‘Paradise Lost’ series, which is set on Themyscira. Can’t wait to see how these new ventures enrich the world of DC!
