As a seasoned film enthusiast with decades of industry experience under my belt, I find myself intrigued by Dan Lin’s tenure at Netflix’s film division. His no-nonsense approach and cost-cutting measures have certainly stirred up a storm in Tinseltown.
Dan Lin assumed leadership of Netflix’s film division back in April, replacing Scott Stuber who left under tough circumstances. Known for his talent-friendly approach and significant investments in projects, attracting big names being a hallmark of his tenure, Stuber is now missed. In contrast, Lin aims to reduce costs in his role. This new strategy has already sparked disagreements with some of the top talents in Hollywood.
Lin’s straightforward and understated approach hasn’t earned him much popularity, it’s clear. As reported by Puck, Lin stirred up controversy not long ago when he utilized an AI-generated voice by filmmaker Christopher Nolan, who is renowned for his refusal to collaborate with Netflix, to narrate a video highlighting the division’s accomplishments.
It’s quite unexpected that Nolan would opt for Netflix, given his historical resistance towards the streaming platform. Netflix acknowledged their collaboration with Nolan, though they remained silent about the AI aspect.
Under Lin’s leadership, approximately 25 films have been approved for production, which includes notable productions. One such project is a political thriller set in the White House, helmed by Kathryn Bigelow. This film stars Ben Affleck and Matt Damon.
A significant upcoming project is Greta Gerwig’s planned Narnia movie, and it’s worth noting that this will be distributed in theaters as part of a contractual agreement. If all goes according to plan, the film may secure an exclusive Imax screening towards the end of 2026.
However, Lin isn’t experiencing only smooth experiences; there’s been a conflict between him and Peter Morgan, the creator of the hit Netflix series The Crown. This dispute stems from discussions about adapting Morgan’s Broadway play Patriots into a film. Following a contentious meeting with Lin in London, Morgan allegedly informed Netflix’s head of content, Bela Bajaria, that he wished to distance himself from Lin in future projects.
David Ellison, Skydance’s CEO, and David Lin have had disagreements over budget matters on multiple projects due to their differing views. Similarly, Mary Parent, a producer known for ‘Enola Holmes’, has voiced discontent, as it’s reported that Lin is keeping the budget for the third film in the popular series lower than what Parent believes is reasonable.
Not only large producers and artists but also Adam Sandler and Tyler Perry are reportedly expressing concerns about how Lin is managing projects. Although it’s common for someone in Lin’s role to encounter resistance, the growing number of notable criticisms suggests a pattern emerging.
Lin’s method leans more towards establishing boundaries rather than relying heavily on grand incentives such as theatrical premieres or large budgets. Such an approach might prove strategic, given the evolving nature of the film industry where studios are increasingly moving away from extravagant expenditures.
On the other hand, striking a balance can be challenging. It might be more difficult to persuade elite talents to collaborate with Netflix when compared to offering them the allure of substantial budgets or conventional cinema screenings.
Given the current strains, the upcoming film decisions by Netflix are intriguing. With Lin and his second-in-command, Doug Belgrad, facing demands for results, they must handle these disagreements tactfully. As Netflix enters a fresh era under Lin’s guidance, it remains to be seen how their partnership with Hollywood’s top stars will develop.
