As an experienced crypto investor with a knack for recognizing promising opportunities, I find the launch of Ethena Labs’ new stablecoin, USDtb, particularly intriguing. The substantial backing from BlackRock’s BUIDL tokenized fund sets it apart from other stablecoins and could potentially provide a more stable investment option in turbulent market conditions.
As an analyst, I’m excited to announce that Ethena Labs has introduced a new stablecoin today, named ‘USDtb.’ Remarkably, approximately 90% of this stablecoin’s reserves are secured by BlackRock’s BUIDL tokenized fund.
With this fresh addition, Ethena’s existing stablecoin, USDe, finds a perfect partner. This empowers Ethena Labs in navigating challenging market circumstances more effectively.
Ethena Labs’ New Stablecoin Offering
As per the recent statement, USDtb is an entirely separate entity from USDe, marking the debut of Ethena’s initial stablecoin. The announcement highlighted that this fresh venture carries a distinct risk structure compared to USDe, owing to its robust support from BlackRock’s investment fund.
Ethena Labs shared on social media that USDtb operates similarly to common stablecoins like USDC and USDT, as each token is backed by cash and assets equivalent to it. Notably, Blackrock’s BUIDL makes up the largest portion of the reserves supporting USDtb, currently holding the highest BUIDL allocation among all stablecoins in the market.
As a crypto investor, I’m thrilled about the long-awaited launch of USDtb, announced by Ethena Labs back in September and finally live today, December 16. The excitement within the community is palpable, as this marks the first significant stablecoin to be supported by BlackRock’s tokenization fund, a move that could reshape the crypto landscape.
In connection with this launch, excitement about Ethena’s native token, ENA, has been evident. After the announcement, ENA experienced a significant increase, reaching its highest price since April at $1.32. Since then, it has had minor corrections and is now trading at $1.20. Over the past month, the token has seen a substantial growth of almost 117%.
A New Competitor in the Stablecoin Market
In light of the growing excitement for USDtb since September, ENA has been receiving numerous investments in recent months. As reported by Binance, World Liberty Financial (WLFI) founded by Donald Trump has recently poured approximately $500,000 into the token. Additionally, this venture has also invested in other digital currencies, like LINK and AAVE.
Furthermore, Ethena Labs posited that their stablecoin could expand without encountering real-world limitations due to its BUIDL support, allowing for seamless and unlimited transactions at no cost for users.
While USDe and the new stablecoin are distinct products, they’ll operate in a mutually beneficial manner. The new stablecoin, being backed by a substantial reserve like USDtb, could serve as a strong foundation for USDe.
Last week, Ethena’s Risk Committee agreed to bring USDtb into their stablecoin (USDe) reserves as a backup asset in the U.S. During times when funding rates are unfavorable, Ethena can liquidate the hedging positions associated with USDe and instead invest its backing assets in USDtb. This move aims to minimize potential risks further. The firm shared this update in their recent announcement.
Essentially, USDtb serves as a tool for Ethena to introduce fresh choices to consumers and safeguard their investment alternatives. By unveiling this new product, Ethena Labs aims to fortify its standing in the intensely competitive stablecoin sector.
As an analyst, I’ve been observing the crypto market for quite some time now, and it’s no secret that Tether’s USDT and Circle’s USDC have reigned supreme for a number of years. However, with the upcoming launches of new stablecoins like Ripple‘s RLUSD, competition in the market is about to heat up even more. If these emerging assets manage to garner widespread popularity, the dominance that Tether has enjoyed for so long could potentially diminish significantly by 2025.
