As a seasoned gamer with decades under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of empathy for Sega and their latest Sonic endeavors. It seems that ‘Sonic Superstars‘, while ambitious, didn’t quite live up to expectations, much like some of my own late-night pizza orders.

Sega’s President, Shuji Utsumi, has expressed his thoughts on Sega’s recent Sonic games, particularly ‘Sonic Frontiers’ and ‘Sonic Superstars’. In an interview, he stated that while ‘Sonic Frontiers’ was intended to introduce new concepts, ‘Sonic Superstars’ did not live up to their hopes. He described the outcome as a ‘disappointment’, as the finished product failed to meet their objectives.

Peeking into the future, Utsumi expresses great enthusiasm for ‘Sonic X Shadow Generations’ and the upcoming Sonic film. He thinks that by blending games and films, they can make a more significant impact. Yet, he underlined that the game’s quality is paramount. If the game lacks strength, other projects may not produce the intended effect.

Utsumi highly appreciated ‘Sonic X Shadow Generations,’ expressing it as ‘simply amazing’ when it comes to action. He subtly indicated that upcoming plans for next year will take the franchise to new heights, implying that fans should keep an eye out for updates at The Game Awards.

‘Sonic Superstars’ came out in October 2023 across various platforms such as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. However, unlike what Sega anticipated, it didn’t reach the level of success they had planned for.

To put it simply, Sega has experimented with different approaches in recent Sonic games, but not all experiments were successful. Utsumi’s remarks underscore the crucial role of robust game development as a cornerstone for expanding into broader entertainment industries.
