As a longtime fan of DC Comics and an avid follower of James Gunn’s creative ventures, I find the inclusion of Sgt. Rock in Creature Commandos truly exhilarating! Having grown up reading comic books from the Silver Age, I vividly remember the gritty realism and heroism embodied by Sgt. Rock and his Easy Company battalion. The news of a feature film adaptation under Luca Guadagnino’s direction fills me with anticipation, as the director’s recent work in Challengers has been nothing short of impressive.
In the latest episode of “Creature Commandos” on Max, DC Comics enthusiasts have been treated to another comic book appearance. Unlike traditional superheroes or villains, this time it’s G.I. Robot stealing the spotlight. The episode titled “Cheers to the Tin Man” offers flashbacks to G.I. Robot’s early days, where he was battling Nazis during World War II. In one of these flashbacks, we see G.I. Robot engaged in combat alongside war hero Sgt. Rock and his renowned unit, Easy Company. This scene at the episode’s opening provides the first hint that Sgt. Rock is part of the new DC Universe. Given the recent news about DC Studios planning a “Sgt. Rock” feature film, this shouldn’t be unexpected.
You might wonder who Sgt. Rock is, and it’s understandable if you do, given that DC Comics hasn’t consistently published a Sgt. Rock comic for over three decades. First appearing in the Our World at War series back in 1959, Sgt. Franklin John Rock was portrayed as the epitome of the All-American soldier. The characters were created by Robert Kanigher, known for his Silver Age Wonder Woman comics, and Joe Kubert. Throughout World War II, Rock leads Easy Company in various battles. He received his own series in 1977, which ran until 1988. Since then, he’s made occasional appearances.
Very recently, news broke about the development of a Sgt. Rock feature film, with director Luca Guadagnino at the helm, fresh from directing Challengers. It appears that James Gunn is preparing the ground for Sgt. Rock across various platforms, and Creature Commandos marks the beginning. Contrary to speculation, Daniel Craig will not be playing Sgt. Rock; instead, it’s character actor Maury Sterling who has been cast in a minor role. However, with such a small appearance, it hardly matters. One thing is clear – James Gunn is definitely thinking about Sgt. Rock, and bigger projects are on the horizon.
