As a long-time fan and admirer of both Kendrick Lamar and Tyler, The Creator, I found myself utterly captivated by their recent collaboration at the Pop Out show. Having attended numerous concerts over the years, I can confidently say that this event was nothing short of extraordinary.
Tyler, Creator was among the unexpected performers at Kendrick Lamar’s “Pop Out” event held at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California last June. The show served as a celebration of sorts for Kendrick, following his win against Drake in their rap competition.
As a gamer, I recently got the chance to witness Tyler, the creator, live at the Pop Out concert, where he performed “WusYaName” from his Call Me If You Get Lost album and “Earfquake” off his Igor LP. In a recent interview with Billboard, Tyler shared that he wasn’t initially planned for the show, but he made it work, even though he was swamped with his Chromakopia project.
He originally wasn’t meant to attend, as he was in Atlanta working on his album. However, he arrived that morning and felt he couldn’t skip it. He doesn’t usually experience the fear of missing out (FOMO), but this time he made an exception… After a rest, he was comfortable enough with Kenny, Dave [Free], and Tim [Hinshaw] from Free Lunch to go home, freshen up, and rush over right away.
In another part of the conversation, the 33-year-old artist discussed a common challenge among successful musicians: Fans requesting him to produce music similar to what he created several years back.
Fans have been urging Nas to return to his style reminiscent of “Illmatic” for about three decades now, and some hope that Eminem will continue being the artist he was during “The Slim Shady LP” era. However, Tyler has made it clear that he won’t revert to an older version of himself merely to satisfy fans’ expectations.
He said, ‘I’m not the person they met at age 20.’ In fact, he’s not the same person as he was just a year ago. When people ask for the old version, he understands they’re referring to the past. But he’s not that person anymore. And he’s comfortable with it because his identity isn’t tied to any specific version of himself.
