As a longtime Marvel fan who’s seen my fair share of comic books and movies, I can’t help but feel a wave of excitement as Chris Evans is rumored to return to the MCU in “Avengers: Doomsday”. Having grown up with Captain America, it’s intriguing to speculate about the roles he might play given the multiversal aspects of the film.
After much speculation, it seems that Chris Evans is indeed rejoining the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the upcoming film, “Avengers: Doomsday.” However, with the multiverse element of this storyline and the potential influence of “Secret Wars,” it’s uncertain if we’ll see the familiar face of Captain America as we’ve known him. Could it be a different version of Cap altogether? Here are some possibilities on who Chris Evans might portray when he returns to the MCU in “Avengers: Doomsday.
Hydra Cap
Could it be possible that Marvel Studios may bring back Chris Evans in a malevolent role, similar to Robert Downey Jr.’s return as Dr. Doom? If they do, the character that seems most fitting for Evans could be the “Hydra Cap.” This character was initially presented in the 2017 “Secret Empire” comic book series. In this storyline, a version of Steve Rogers is revealed to have been secretly raised as a Hydra sleeper agent. It’s conceivable that we might encounter a variant from another universe who is an evil fascistic Captain America. Given his friendship with RDJ, Chris Evans might be enticed by the opportunity to portray a villain. This Cap appears to be the most likely candidate for such a role.
What If…? Steve Rogers
In one thrilling episode from season one of “What If…?”, Peggy Carter was the one who received the super soldier serum instead of Steve Rogers. However, despite missing out on the serum, Steve Rogers remained a hero and fought evil in his own unique way – by using an early Iron Man suit built by Howard Stark! Inside this suit, Steve appeared as the same skinny, scrawny character he was before, but thanks to some clever digital magic, Chris Evans reprised that version of Steve, showing us that he’s a hero regardless of his muscular physique.
Old Man Steve
Absolutely, it’s plausible that Evans is portraying the Steve Rogers we’ve always recognized, who has now reached a very advanced age. Contrary to popular belief, we know that Captain America didn’t perish in the battle of Endgame; instead, he traveled back in time and spent his days with Peggy Carter. Given this, it’s likely he’s well over a century old. However, the super soldier serum appears to have kept him relatively healthy. Possibly, he’ll be under old age makeup throughout, serving as a mentor to a fresh group of Avengers.
Johnny Storm/The Human Torch
You might be pondering, “Hold up, didn’t Johnny Storm from the 2005 Fantastic Four film meet his tragic end at the hands of Cassandra Nova in Deadpool & Wolverine?” Indeed, that’s correct. However, it’s not necessarily the same Johnny Storm/Human Torch as portrayed by Chris Evans in those movies. Instead, it could be a different Johnny from the multiverse. Remember, the Johnny from those films wasn’t particularly known for his colorful language. So, there’s a possibility that the Human Torch character Chris Evans played is still alive and well. This could mean that we might see him again in Avengers: Doomsday. In other words, it may be time to ignite those flames once more for Chris Evans!
World War II Captain America
If Doomsday is traversing multiple universes, it could potentially be moving across time as well. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, “timelines” and “parallel universes” share similarities, so perhaps we might encounter a younger Steve Rogers, full of enthusiasm during his days fighting Nazis. This was a time when he was still relatively innocent and quite different from the character we saw in later Avengers movies. Given that it’s been over a decade since Captain America: The First Avenger, some digital de-aging would be necessary. However, considering Chris Evans is still in excellent physical condition, the visual effects team probably wouldn’t have too much work on their hands to make this possible.
On May 1, 2026, when Avengers: Doomsday premieres in theaters, we’ll definitively learn who Chris Evans is portraying.
