As a seasoned Star Trek enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of this beloved franchise from its humble beginnings to the current era of reboots and spin-offs, I must say that the latest trailer for “Star Trek: Section 31” has me both excited and intrigued. The return of Michelle Yeoh as the enigmatic Empress Phillipa Georgiou is a delightful treat, and the glimpse into the luxurious casino planet or space station (the jury’s still out on that one) reminds me of my own adventures in the galaxy’s most exotic locales… well, virtual ones at least.
Michelle Yeoh, renowned actress and Academy Award winner, is currently captivating audiences with her portrayal of the enigmatic Madame Morrible in Wicked. However, come early next year, she will reprise her role as another mysterious character she brought to life, former Empress Phillipa Georgiou, in the Paramount+ film titled Star Trek: Section 31. This project was initially conceived as a new Star Trek series, but Paramount transformed it into a movie last year. The film centers around Yeoh’s charismatic yet deceitful character introduced in Star Trek: Discovery. The Section 31 movie is set to premiere on January 24, and you can watch the latest trailer for it right here.
From this latest sneak peek, we can infer that a significant portion of the story unfolds on a lavish cosmic casino setting, though it could potentially be a space station as well (the details aren’t entirely clear). This environment brings to mind Canto Bight, the opulent gambling world from The Last Jedi. Long-term Star Trek followers will instantly spot an alien species not seen since 1969 – the Cheron. Star Trek introduced these beings, who are half black and half white, in the TOS episode “Let That Be Your Last Battlefield.” Star Trek fans believed this species to be extinct, but it appears that at least one of them has managed to survive, residing in the Alpha Quadrant.
The main character of the title, Section 31, represents Starfleet’s covert black ops division that has been operating secretly for centuries within the Federation. Originating as a rumor in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, they were later explored more in series such as Enterprise and Discovery. In the upcoming movie, we’re unsure of Section 31’s mission, but Yeoh’s character, despite her morally questionable actions to accomplish her objectives, appears to be relishing them.
Star Trek: Section 31 hits Paramount+ on January 24, 2025.
