The film was helmed by director Gerard Johnstone, with screenplay penned by Akela Cooper. The story was developed jointly by Cooper and James Wan. The release date for this highly-anticipated film was then shifted from January 2025 to June 27, 2025.
Information on the plot of M3GAN 2.0 is scarce, but there have been whispers circulating in the industry by a source known as MyTimeToShineHello. These rumors about the storyline were divulged through a premium subscription, though it’s worth noting that this insider has an inconsistent history with accurate leaks and scoops.
Based on the leak’s information, in M3GAN 2.0, robot M3GAN is refashioned to confront a menacing military AI called AMELIA, portrayed by Ivanna Sakhno, which aims to dominate the globe. In this iteration, M3GAN assumes the heroic role.
It’s not yet verified, but given the growing prevalence of AI and its frequent appearance in science fiction, it appears plausible.
It’s confirmed that Gerard Johnston is coming back as the director for this project, joined by fresh faces such as Ivanna Sakhno and Jemaine Clement. Principal photography kicked off in New Zealand during July 2024, wrapping up by October 2024.
James Wan also mentioned that he has an “idea of where sequels would go.”
