As a dedicated follower and admirer of Amy Poehler‘s work, I find her journey with Inside Out truly inspiring. Her portrayal of Joy has not only brought joy to countless children but also sparked deep introspection in her own life.
At a recent event, Amy Poehler, who lends her voice to the character Joy in both the original 2015 Inside Out movie and its upcoming 2024 sequel, shared with People magazine that this role has ignited significant conversations and introspective thoughts for her about understanding and managing emotions.
53-year-old Poehler shared that her involvement in Inside Out and its sequel has deeply transformed her life. “Portraying a character like Joy, engaging in profound discussions about the roles our emotions play within us, how they coexist inside us, and the proper ways to experience them,” she expressed.
Previously, in June, Poehler shared with People her personal connection to Riley, the central character in the franchise. At 13, Riley grapples with a complex whirlwind of feelings – Joy, Sadness, Anger, Disgust, Fear, and many more – that often accompany puberty. In the upcoming sequel, Joy and Anxiety, a new emotion within Riley, struggle for control in her mind. This power struggle between these two emotions brought back memories of Poehler’s 13-year-old self.
She playfully admitted to feeling a blend of apprehension and exhilaration, with a hint of her Boston tone. Essentially, she experienced much of what Riley did, as her mind was buzzing with countless thoughts.
In an interview with the outlet in April, the SNL alum shared that stepping into the voiceover studio to record Joy’s lines frequently triggered profound personal insights, as the content she addressed was highly emotional. The actress disclosed that recording her part sometimes felt like she was addressing her inner child, while other times it seemed like she was speaking as a parent to herself. Despite the emotional demands, Poehler mentioned that the work proved incredibly rewarding.
Currently, the actress finds herself raising not one but two teenage boys – Archie (16) and Abel (14), whom she co-parents with her ex-husband Will Arnett. She recently shared that she’s experiencing firsthand just how difficult it can be for teenagers to manage their feelings, especially in today’s complex society.
At the mentioned gathering, Poehler commended the group’s goal to eliminate the societal prejudice related to mental health, focusing notably on the youth population.
